Rodger McFarlane, a leader in the gay rights movement during the early days of the AIDS epidemic and the first executive director of the Gay Mens Health Crisis, died Friday in Truth or Consequences, N.M. He was 54 and lived in Denver.
He committed suicide, Mr. McFarlanes brother John confirmed. In a letter that he left, Mr. McFarlane wrote that he was unwilling to become further debilitated by heart and back problems. He had broken his back in 2002.
Mr. McFarlane was director of the Gay Mens Health Crisis from 1982 through 1985. The organization, which now provides services for more than 15,000 people affected by H.I.V. and AIDS in New York City, was an early and vocal advocate for public and private research to deal with the disease.
Mr. McFarlane went on to lead two other prominent AIDS-related organizations. From 1989 to 1994 he was executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a partnership of two theater-industry groups that provides grants for AIDS services. He was later president of Bailey House, which provides housing for homeless people with AIDS.
From 2004 to 2008, Mr. McFarlane was executive director of the Gill Foundation in Denver. Founded by the software entrepreneur Tim Gill, the foundation finances programs advocating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights.
The Gay Mens Health Crisis was started in 1982 by six men who had lost friends to AIDS and were dismayed by the lack of services for those with the disease.
Among the founders was the playwright and gay rights activist Larry Kramer, who became a close friend of Mr. McFarlane.

The male homosexual "lifestyle" is suicidal and barren. Why is it OK to barrage kids about the dangers of smoking and drinking but not this?
I see he died in the town Truth or Consequences. Hmm.
It was painless. It brought on many changes.
Looks like he committed suicide because of a continuing debilitation from a recovered broken back, not the homosexuality.
“He had broken his back in 2002.”
Was he on Brokeback Mountain?
Brokeback Mounting?
I could do without having that song going through my head all day...
And he could take or leave it as he pleased?
Poor taste. He was a human being.
T or C, as we call it here, was once named Hot Springs. The name change came in a challenge by no less than Bob Barker when he ran a game program call Truth or Censequences.
I would consider some dude's c*** up my a** to be more of a problem than heart and back issues. Geez.
Some call themselves 'Christians'.
He apparently ignored the truth, and so got the consequences.
Because in the overall scheme of things, that would decrease the chances of liberals hooking up, which is what they care about, mostly.
Please people, lets not act crude about this tragic event.
Send up prayers for his friends and family...don’t make idiotic and cruel wisecracks.
FreeRepublic is better than that.
“The male homosexual “lifestyle” is suicidal and barren.”

And the female homosexual lifestyle is hateful and vicious. Witness the ongoing assault on boys and young men throughout the lesbian-infested public “educational” system.
If I had health problems and was stuck in T or C, I might consider offing myself.
If it was Datil or Wagnon Mound, I’d definitely do it.
Wow. I used to use Quark Express all the time. I never knew it was the man-child of this fruit though. *Sigh*
No wonder it was the whacky liberal nuts in the publishing and design industry t hat I used to work for that solidified my Conservative values and got away from those weirdos when I found out that I was only person in the office that thought Bill Clinton was a lying sociopath that had no chance to make it to the White House in 1992.

Exactly. It will be spun differently to the homosexual agenda whatever it may be that day or month.
Reminds me of a college Intro to Jazz class I took. The teacher(a somewhat famous Jazz pianist) would hand grade your final exam, an essay test about the Jazz greats. You could write the most beautiful insightful essay but if you put down that the artist died of a drug overdose instead of “artistic frustration”, you couldn't pull more than a B grade. My buddies and I tested our theory by submitting the EXACT same essays except for the “artistic frustration” words and sure enough one got an A the other a B grade.
>Yes, there are those who would take great pleasure in the death of some >people. Enough to joke about it.
>Some call themselves ‘Christians’.
And some Conservatives don’t care about Christianity.
