PITTSBURGH -- James Harrison plans to pass on another trip to the White House with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Harrison, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, says he'll skip the Super Bowl champion's visit to the White House to meet President Barack Obama on Thursday, just as he did when the Steelers were honored by President George W. Bush in June 2006.

That’s the only appropriate response. Politicians use others to extend their own popularity with these staged and phony photo ops. Politicians are slimy and disgusting weasels whether Democrat or Republican.

Who?

You wouldn't be saying that if you lived in Arizona.

People in Arizona need to get a life. Jocks come and go like rock stars. At least their “public” doesn’t let them hang around and embarrass themselves until they are seventy.

A man of principle. I admire him for it. AFter all, going to the White House is NOT mandatory. He has a RIGHT to choose and he chose for whatever reasons. Good for him!

Lived in Arizona for three years. Arizona people DO have lives. Great ones. Great weather, beautiful mountains and desert. Wonder what you mean when you say Arizona people need to get a life. What does that mean exactly? What are you trying to say? It’s not clear.

I mean the sports thing. I must admit, however, that I probably should throw stones. The local people have let Jerry Jones steal them blind. And the day that one of our local scientists won a Nobel prize, the main story on the front page of the Dallas Morning News was about an superannuated quarterback.

If only the entire team would do this. Ah, well. Kudos to James for at least being consistent and not sucking up to Bammy just because they’re both black.

The local reporters have been mystified by his reaction. I can just see them wishing they were going in his place. They can’t wrap their minds around it. I wish Rooney had kept football and politics seperate.

Oh I see. Well, you know...the athletes are the front page headlines both good and bad. It’s the people’s fault everywhere. They continue to support the outrageous salaries etc. I sometimes wonder how a family can even afford to go to a ball game anymore. We stick to TV IF we even decide to watch that is. :)

Yeah, the prices suit the rich. The cheapest seat in the house that Jones built, or rather the house that Arlington built for Jones, is about $60. But the same can be said about the “Ballpark’ where the Rangers play. Back in 1995 I was in New England and went to a ball game at Fenway Park. Roger Clemens was pitching that day (and off form). When I sat in the first base/ right field bleachers, was half way between first base and the foul pole. The right fielders was about 90 feet away. and I could see the sweat on his face. I paid $15 for that seat. The comparable seat in Arlington cost more than $100 back in 1999, the last time I attended. Baseball has priced itself out of the market. People my age were still playing sandlot baseball (hardball) when we were young. Today, softball or bowling. Golf is also a rich man’s sport. Who would have think that baseball would ever be just a sport for rich spectators. Even little league is dying.
