President Barack Obama will issue new vehicle emission standards and pair them with a broader goal of reducing pollution, marking the first time limits on greenhouse gases will be linked to federal standards for cars and trucks.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration will raise fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2016, four years earlier than federal law requires.

Officials familiar with the administration's discussions say Obama will unveil the new standards on Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement had not been made.

California, 13 other states and the District of Columbia have urged the federal government to let them enact more stringent standards than the federal government's requirements. The states' regulations would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in new cars and trucks by 2016.

How can a president require something of people and companies outside of the legal standard?

Government should mandate:

100 mpg fuel economy
$100 per hour minimum wage
1000 sf minimum living space per person

And while they are at it, why don't they mandate a cure to cancer and heart disease.

Maybe Obama can top that all off by parting the Red Sea when he visits a pig-free Egypt.

Exactly. This isn’t even being legislated. It’s a White House directive. And this arrogant POS gets away with it.

I have a Honda Fit. It gets 34 mpg. 35 mpg for all cars seems unrealistic.

The Fit is a good little car for about town and for summer driving, but not good for long trips or after snowstorms.

He trading barrels of oil form body bags.

This is because auto producers will be forced to make cars at much lowers weights which in turn will lead to more deaths as the lower mass cars will not be able to provide needed protection to their occupants.

only way to do that is smaller engines and lighter vehicles. and that means they just got significantly less safe.

but since BHO owns GM now, he can force them to build whatever kind of car he wants.

Time to buy some older, larger cars and put them away, along with some spare parts.

Seriously, I wonder if diesel has any role in this? It certainly makes sense, but saying "diesel" in front of an enviro-freak causes much the same reaction as saying "nuclear power."

Morons. We sit on hundreds of years of coal reserves, gas is being found in quantities unheard of in this country, and the shale oil deposits in Colorado and North Dakota may hold as much oil as has been burned since Col. Drake discovered it in 1859. Plus we have off shore oil and nukes. But these jackasses want to force us into unsafe cars and tax or regulate our industries to death.

We've got to unchain the beast, the drive and creativeness of the American economy. It is OVER unless we get rid of this charlatan, this pretender, in 2012, and de-ball him in 2010 by taking back a lot of seats then.

And that is perfectly fine. But no one in their right mind would put a loved one in one of those death traps on the interstate up against convoys of tracter trailers.

we have to understand all this means is that the democrap limosine rich will be able to drive their Humvees and their mercedes etc but only if most of we peasants drive the little tiny cars.....that way, if there is an accident, the rich democrap limosine liberal jerks will live and not be injured, and the little peasants will take the brunt of the crash.

So much for the F150.

You'll probably still be able to buy an F350, and maybe an F250. But the F150 in the driveway is probably going away, and very quickly.

The heavier pickups will still be around as contractor vehicles but they will be priced too high or otherwise made unattractive to the average car buyer.

“It’s a White House directive...”

Apparently that is the only law that matters now. Obama can apparently now dictate technological breakthroughs. The laws of physics better not get in his way.

Does a president have the authority to set such standards. And, if so, from where does he derive it??
Just curious!!

No and nowhere.
But hey when you are a dictator you do whatever you want tooas long as the fools,I mean the citizens allow you to...
