Hoekstra requests more CIA briefing documents

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, House Republicans' point man on the burgeoning interrogation controversy, is seeking more documents from the CIA in light of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's assertion that the CIA lied to her.

Hoekstra (R-Mich.), the ranking Republican on the House intelligence committee, is asking the agency for the documents that CIA staffers reviewed to prepare for their congressional briefings on the Bush administration's interrogation program.

"I was greatly concerned at allegations made by Speaker Pelosi that intelligence professionals from the CIA 'misled' her and potentially other members of Congress," Hoekstra wrote in a letter sent Friday. "Accordingly I am writing to ... request copies of additional records that may further clarify the matter, as well as the performance of the CIA employees whose conduct has been questioned.

"I believe the record would also be clarified by any documents or records that were used to prepare for such briefings by CIA or intelligence community personnel."

Those briefings include a now-controversial September 2002 briefing with Pelosi (D-Calif.). Records released by the CIA at Hoekstra's request indicate that briefers told Pelosi about the tactics used on terror suspect Abu Zabaydah, who'd been waterboarded 83 times in August.

Pelosi, who considers waterboarding to be torture, said Thursday she was specifically told that intelligence agents were not waterboarding detainees. She said those doing the briefing were "misleading the United States Congress."

Hoekstra has already asked for the declassification and public release of "memoranda for the record" – notes made by briefers after the briefing on what they'd just told members of Congress.

Hoekstra's letter Friday did not ask that the documents used to prepare for the briefings to be declassified for release to the public.

Way to go, Pete! “Make the enemy follow its own rules.” Demand “transparency” from the Obama Administration. Keep the pressure on. Good of Pete to protect the hapless CIA employees who were doing their jobs. Show the Dem foot soldiers that their leadership is immoral, unethical, and willing to dispose of their own for the sake of self-preservation. “Answer a fool according to his own folly.”
