North Dakota's Board of Higher Education has agreed to drop the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian head logo, a move intended to resolve a decades-long campus dispute about whether the name demeans American Indians.

I actually think most Indians want more references to them, and afterall, Indian sports names honor the proud, strong, fighthing spirit of the Indians.....
Fightin’ Irish is one. Tulane Green Wave?
*************
LOL!
There were these protests some years ago at San Diego State University, where the nickname is Aztecs. And we heard how Aztecs is demeaning to Mexicans and the memory of Montezuma and all that. They took a vote of students and alumni, and 92% voted that they should keep the name. So the effort to force the name change at San Diego State died out. And they are the San Diego State Aztecs to this day.
LMAO!
Whoops... there should be their and I know better...
I’m tired of everyone assuming I’m a racist and had everything handed to me simply because I’m white.
I want the same rights as “first nations” or whatever they call themselves - starting with no longer being called “white”....
“Having Cherokee ancestors, imho names like the Fighting Sioux (or Chiefs, Braves, or Warriors) are not insulting. Nor are teams named after tribes (like the FSU Seminoles.) They are part of American history and culture, and these names highlight POSITIVE aspects of native-Americans from the past.”
I have a friend who is half Seminole and he told me that his family finds the term “Native American” very insulting. His family prefers “American Indian.”
The Felidae League has issued a protest against the Bengals and Lions as embarrassments to cats everywhere.
How about Kumbaya Sioux?
I’m really angry that a university would allow itself to be cowed by this stupid PC stuff. How about having a game with no winners so that some fragile psyches wouldn’t be razzled.
Harvard Crimson, Stanford Cardinal.
Call them the UND Fightin’ Custers if it’s so offensive.
the fighting insurance salesmen!
What is intended as cultural sensitivity is really cultural ethnic cleansing. There is no disgrace of the Sioux people being known as proud and fierce defenders of their people.
But now, any remembrance of the native north American people is taboo. First we wiped out their future, now we’re wiping out their past.
There’s a flying squirrel called the fairydiddle; I don’t think anyone has chosen that name for their team, nor snail-darters, ostriches, prairie dogs, sand cranes, and many others. None of them have associations or lawyers. At least not yet. Might be something for ACORN or a Vista volunteer to look into, though.
UND Non-Aggressive Love Lumps of Clay. Go Non-Aggressive Love Lumps of Clay!
