Coffee, a healthy product with an unhealthy image (lower risk of developing dementia later in life)

Most people when asked about coffee will say ‘don’t drink too much, it’s not good for you’, ‘don’t drink it at night, it will keep you awake’. That might be true for a small minority, but for the majority of us there are many positive reasons why drinking a cup of coffee could well be doing us good.

Coffee is one of the drinks available to keep us alert and to keep the brain firing on all cylinders. There are other drinks that can provide caffeine, the compound responsible, but none offer the other health benefits of coffee.

In recent times there have been many scientific papers that have linked the consumption with reductions in chronic illness. A study in Japan indicated that two cups of coffee a day resulted in a 40% decrease in the chance of getting cirrhosis of the liver.

Research in Finland suggests that middle-aged adults who regularly drink a cup of coffee may have a lower risk of developing dementia later in life. There has even been a study that has shown that having a cup of coffee a day will reduce the chances of committing suicide by 13% per cup.

A healthy diet with good nutritional balance is well recognised as important in reducing the risk of many diseases. Our mind automatically turns to fruit and vegetables, never coffee. Yet, coffee contains chlorogenic acids and these have been shown to reduce the harmful effect of cholesterol. Research has also revealed coffee has beneficial effects in reducing some cancers, types of diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

Yet, like all good things, there is a limit. For most people, 400mg of caffeine is about the daily maximum and that equates to about four to five cups of coffee.

And that is not all. Coffee is a major international commodity with over five million tonnes produced annually across 50 plus countries. It makes a major contribution to the economy of many of those countries.

It’s time we all looked at coffee in a new light, time to offer coffee as a health drink.

Caffeine helps your body burn fat. I loved it for longer distance rides.

You like your coffee like mine: strong, sweet, and lots of it. I grind my own beans, but the big thing is that I use distilled water and natural crystal sugar. That way no taste is imparted to the coffee by the water and the demerarra sugar adds an extra dimension to the flavor. And a glass cup if I can. Everything tastes better in glass.

Get really fresh coffee from a small batch roaster or roast your own. Really fresh coffee roasted right has a natural sweetness that reduces the need for sugar and other additives. Try this site; Coffee Roaster

You are correct. There's more to a great cup of coffee than most people know, and I suspect that most people think it's too much bother to get the right beans, fresh roasted, the right grind, the right filter, and the right brewer.

Personally, I think it's worth it. I have a sign posted in my kitchen (yes, the kitchen belongs to me, not my wife!) right above the coffee brewer that reads: "Life Is Too Short For Bad Coffee!" (right next to my framed and signed print of Darryl Willison's "Fresh Cowboy Coffee" artwork).

I know, I'm obsessed with coffee, but hey, it had to be something.

Instead of using distilled water you should try using just filtered water or spring water. Distilled it actually “too pure”. There is nothing left for some of the various flavor compounds and components to bond to (all the minerals have been removed by the distillation process). If you have “soft” water at your house, you don’t want to use that either.

I roast my own green beans in a hot air popcorn popper with a custom made screen chimney to keep the beans from flying everywhere. Only downside is you can’t get distracted and forget it’s going, it’ll probably catch fire if let run long enough. I say probably, because the one time I walked away and forgot it, I realized my mistake at the “very heavy smoke plume” stage. Smoked up the neighborhood real good.

Also, try “re-roasting” storebought roasted beans (8 o’clock, Starbucks, whatever) till it just begins to crackle. It makes mediocre beans infinately better.

There’s nothin’ better than coffee made with fresh ground beans still warm (not hot) from the roaster brewed in a french press. Worth every bit of the small extra hassle.

When it first started back in 2004, went to the hospital ER. After $14,000 dollars in tests at a cardiac center, they came back and told me my ticker was good and to stop drinking caffeine and not to take any other stimulants for a while.

I use a stirring base from a stircrazy pop corn maker to stir the beans and a supentown convection oven top placed on the stir crazy base to roast the beans. About $100 if both items purchased new.

Half & half is fake stuff. We use heavy whippin' cream. We also percolate in our stainless steel camp coffee pot on the stovetop. If you can see through it, it's not done!
