Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at December rally in Georgia.
Commentary: Alaska governor appears set for 2012 presidential bid -- A year after she became an overnight celebrity in America, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin still confounds journalists.
You would think that the national media, which spends lots of money to uncover political trends from every nook and truck stop between Portland, Maine, and Portland, Ore., would understand Palin's appeal by now. After all, she rose to prominence as John McCain's running mate last year and helped bolster the disaffected, conservative wing of the Republican Party.
Sarah Palin Returns to the Stage. The media still don't seem to like the former vice-presidential candidate, but she's here to stay in politics and deserves more respect, says Jon Friedman. (May 13) You also might assume journalists could grudgingly appreciate Palin's appeal to conservative voters -- especially the potentially influential "soccer-mom" demographic.
Palin is "a huge fundraising tool," noted veteran journalist Melinda Henneberger. "People love to read about her. She is very attractive -- and we don't have a surplus of that in American politics. People love to love her and they love to hate her."
Palin was a major story in 2008 because she introduced so many unexpected elements to the political scene because of her gender, age, home state and uncanny ability to charm audiences with her charismatic flair.
She isn't going away, either. By all indications, Palin is now building toward a run at the White House in 2012. That's why the media should take her seriously.
Palin added to her high profile by agreeing to write a book about her life and experiences in politics for HarperCollins, it was reported widely on Wednesday. (HarperCollins, like MarketWatch, is a unit of News Corp. (NWS 10.22, +0.31, +3.13%) )

“She is very attractive — and we don’t have a surplus of that in American politics.”
And the surplus we do have is pretty much all on the right. We have Sarah Palin, Miss America. The libs have...well...woof.
You’re bad.
LOL
Well they have Lindsey Gramnesty.
No wonder Henneberger is befuddled.
The article never delivers the promise of the headline/title. Another MSM failure.
Sarah is a Conservative it is that simple. The msm is radical leftist. If Ronald Mc Donald was a consertive they would be after him too.
You scared me.
Pretty simple, really.
Palin doesn't listen to the pudits, relies on her own beliefs, and doesn't give a damn about what the 'polls' or airheads think.
The media is just bewildered they don't have 'control' over her.
Hey Radar, I wanted to see SARAH on the video, not Jon!! LOL!! Oh well...
I do not trust this sexy temptresses. Palin is on video supporting ‘The Bridge to nowhere’ and Alaska kept the money after the bridge was canceled. That does not give me much faith in her resistance to pork.
The Lib media have taught their constituents that Sarah was the reason McCain LOST... They actually BELIEVE this!
I’ve heard it time and time again.. Boobs...
Unlike the big 0, she was not created by the media.
She has credibility in actually accomplishing things.
The media loves that they created obama, and hate that they didn’t have a part in ‘creating’ Palin.
It’s not Sarah they hate, per se. It’s Christ. And she (and Carrie Prejean) have the “scent of the knowledge of Him” about them.
actuaslly, it is one of the above.
Sarah Palin is one of us - she’s an ordinary American who has had the audacity of rising above her station into something approaching greatness. people can identify with her. how dare she try to become an elite?!?! uppity. ain’t she?
and when you add that she has the courage of her convictions, there is little wonder why she is being “Quayled” by the dem/media.
Well, Palin’s smart for starting now.
She needs to be really conscious of her image and exactly what it is she wants to sell to the American people- because it’s not just conservatives she needs to sell to if she wants to win.
She needs to get that family thing under control. They’ve got a right to be how they want- there’s nothing wrong with being a redneck. But if she wants to get in the White House, she needs to get them marching to the right tune and not give the media more stones to throw at her than is absolutely necessary.
And I think she needs to stay focused as long as possible on her issues- and not make her campaign about being the ‘Anti-Obama’. She needs to save that for the end game. Wait for him to screw everything up completely and then descend for the coup de grace.
