Earlier this week the British Broadcasting Corporation, or BBC, appointed a Muslim as head of its religious programming department -- a move being hailed as a "radical departure from broadcasting tradition."
Aaqil Ahmed, former executive at Channel 4, is the new of Head of Religion and Ethics and Commissioning Editor for Religion TV, a position some call one of the most influential religious roles in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, is concerned over the appointment of a Muslim, claiming it comes at a time when Christian leaders worry their faith is being marginalized and criticized by authorities. The Church of England notes that Muslims make up only three percent of the country's population while nearly 70 percent claim to be Christian.
However, other religious leaders are taking a wait-and-see approach, calling Ahmed a "respected professional" and the most qualified person for the position. Some even claim that turning him down because of his faith, despite his credentials, would amount to discrimination.
The BBC has successfully transition from my “most respected broadcast group” right down there to Nancy Pelosi IQ level.
I now go out of my way to avoid any news article linking to them - a 180 degree change of course from my previous practice of seeking them out on short wave.
I’m surprised that Rowan Williams objects. I thought he was a big Muslim supporter. Maybe he’s disturbed because this guy isn’t gay as well as Muslim?
Sometimes I wonder of Christians would be well served to just go on a rampage for a few days whacking off heads just to gain a little respect. But I guess this all must come to pass before the end.
Why islam is able to command respect from the west given how barbaric they are in any country they dominate is really beyond my understanding.
Hey, this is the BBC we're talking about need we say more?
This would be the kind of tripe we'd get if our television networks were primarily funded by government "TV license fees".
Oh wait! We do have tripe like this on TV, but instead, we get to pay it to our cable/satellite provider! Oh well...
Great...just great...I'm talking to myself again.
Barbarians who won’t hesitate to use force to impose their beliefs and never give up tend to get their way with milquetoasts like the BBC. It was that way at the fall of Constantinople and the basic rules haven’t changed.
It’s probably because this guy is moderate and conservative. The Archbishop wanted bin Laden or Zawahiri.

That is because we have been brainwashed in the western world that all religions are pretty much equal but what a lot of people don’t realize is that this “equality among religions” talk started when the religions that we were talking about were all variation on Judeo-Christianity.
They failed to realize that once you started adding other religions into this discussion that not all of them are as civil about things like Judeo-Chrisitianity is, some religions like Buddhism and Hinduism fit pretty well in to the “Equality amongst religions” because they had evolved to the point where chopping people’s heads off was not so much a part of their doctrines. They tried their one-size fits all religions approach and they made an epic fail.
Dr. Williams,
You of all people speaking up in protest. I find this laughable. Your tolerance over “some aspects” of Sharia Law is inexcuseable while the splits of the church over gay priests was the last straw for many.
You’ve done enough damage.
just as well no shot would be fired...
Perhaps hes finally woken up.

and yet dictate so many aspects of English policy. The three percent only have the influence they have because the 97% are too busy keeping a stiff upper lip to speak out. Perhaps our English cousins need us to send them some tea to get them started on exercising their free right to protest? :)
I long ago gave up on the BBC and I say that as a Brit who used to respect their news department above all.
islam, a cult from hell. islam is terrorism.
The head of BBC Relgious Programming from 2001-2006 was a Jew.
Did the sky fall?. Erm, no.
I’d much prfer a Christian head, BUT a religious man, albeit a Muslim, is a better choice IMO than the usual Islington-based middle class twerp in the BBC whose PC views are so thick you could cut ‘em with a knife, and who would treat serious religious programming with contempt and religious people as narrow minded backward bigots.
This gentleman’s CH4 shows on Christianity have been rather good, so I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.
You should have stated that it was LIBERAL Jew who headed BBC Religious Programming during 2001-2006. Theere's a HUGE difference. As to the choice of A Muslim to head the Dept of Religion, he may come in as a lamb, but when it come to Israeli Sovereignty or Muslim Right of Return, his true colors will come to the surface in no subtle way.
