Could North Carolina have another former NFL player in its Congressional ranks?
Former Carolina Panthers star safety Mike Minter is considering running for Congress against Rep. Larry Kissell (D-N.C.), according to a Republican operative.
Minter was in Washington earlier this week and spoke with the National Republican Congressional Committee to discuss a possible GOP campaign. He still is a long way off from making a decision, but has begun to consider a career in politics.
Minter played for the Panthers from 1997-2006, and was one of the top defensive players in the league. Since his playing days, he has been active in the Charlotte-area evangelical community, and has been in touch with former GOP Rep. Robin Hayes.
Republicans feel they have a good shot at winning back Kissell's district. The Charlotte-area seat gave President Obama 52 percent of the vote, aided by record-high African-American turnout. But Minter, who is black, would in credible position to win some of the African-American vote in the district..
Minter looks to be following in another NFL player-turned-congressman's footsteps. In 2006, voters in North Carolina's 11th District elected former Redskins quarterback Heath Shuler as their representative.
Unlike Minter, Shuler was not renowned for his NFL exploits, but was well-known in the western Carolina district for playing pigskin at the University of Tennessee.
IIRC, Minter is African American and has a brother who played in the NFL, but I cannot remember his name.
Heath Shuler, if I am not mistaken, is a democrat (moderate, if there is such a thing). He won’t be moderate long now that he’s in D.C.
He also owns owns properties (and lists them) all over N.C. and Tennessee, including several high dollar properties on the lake where I live in Tennessee.
Heath Shuler really should have run from Tennessee where most of his properties are. He is just another Democrat lemming who runs with the liberals. He has not been above voting for bills that favor his holdings in Tennessee.
I hope that Minter will not be a RINO.
That is all true, and worst of all, he and his wife attended our church. I never recognized him, but my hubby did. Hard for me to figure out how someone who goes to a Bible Thumping Southern Baptist “In the name of Jesus Christ” church and be a moderate. O wait, there are over 3k voters, I mean um, brothers and sisters in Christ. I can overlook a moderate in our church, they will either stop coming or be shaken, not stirred by the Holy Spirit. I remember going to church when I was not saved, it was a religious exercise.
Moving from NC within 2 yrs and durn glad. All the California and Taxachusetts refugees are ruining it.
Be careful. Really vet these people. They lie like crazy. It’s best we find our own.
Yes momincombatboots, as you no doubt know, Asheville is the San Francisco of the east. Used to be a nice place, but now overrun with left wingers.
Across the border here in Tennessee we are still conservative, with low taxes. My town here (I live 10 miles from town) has no city taxes. The mayor said a 10 year-old garbage truck works just as well as a new one. We have a Super Walmart, which pays enough taxes to provide services, said the mayor.
My county taxes are $350 a year. That’s is one of the many reasons I love it here. Just hope Heath Shuler doesn’t sell much of this property around here to those who want to “change things, do it the we we did it up north.” If you know what I mean (LOL).
