Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will direct his administration to send 5,000 layoff notices to state workers Friday, according to a source familiar with the governor's budget plan.

The Republican governor plans to eliminate 5,000 workers by the end of June, ..

All Californians need to make sacrifices. Which is why I propose we build an altar in Capitol Park and drag out the legislators one at a time until the budgets start improving.

This is , as they say in the movies, just a flesh wound.. as long as you aren’t amongst those getting dinged.

Saw a T-Shirt picture yesterday that said on it:

Recession is when your neighbor is fired,
Depression is when you are fired,
Recovery is when Obama is fired.

Why not 500,000?

"Why only 5,000, it should be at least 50,000!!!"

I'll see your 50,000 and raise you a million.

THANKS calcowgirl - for that excellent table you posted!

I'm VERY interested in a link to that page (I might have missed a link to it, but didn't see one.)

Note that the table is for MARCH only of 2007! That means the total State expenditure per month, two years ago, was $2,118,772,912 - or $25,425,274,944 per year.

I think the whole table is pretty much a lie - but, a taste of the truth today.

P.S. - If the table is to be believed, there were 57,272 total state employees at the time. I believe it is near double that today.

Sorry — I was being lazy and didn’t want to have to deal with hyperlinking. Note that what I posted is only state employees... not including local governments (which is where you find all the K-12 teachers, I believe). These headcount and salary numbers would equate to only a small part of the total revenue/expenditures of the state. And there is much more to the state expenditures than labor.

This is the query page:
http://www.census.gov/govs/index.html

This is the page from which you can choose any state:
http://www.census.gov/govs/www/apesst07view.html

And here is the link to the actual table I posted:

This one includes local governments so you pick up the teachers, but it also includes all of your city and county government
(whether funded by state or local taxes, I believe). It's hard to match this database to the State General Fund numbers.

Five million illegals leaving CA would go a long way toward fixing this state’s budget problems.

Oh, No! What would they do about the housing surplus??? It would cause blight of our neighborhoods! The schools would be empty! Rob Reiner's First-Five wouldn't have any customers! There would be no people to take advantage of the after-school-programs. What would Home Depot do with all their shiny new day-worker facilities?

The arguments for big government are so twisted, but easy to predict.

Yeah, I know. But the answers to their stupidity would just confuse them anyway. Hey, if there are fewer criminal miscreants in our state, there might be more people coming back to CA who left when the State Gov failed to do their job in protecting citizens. Businesses might return to provide more jobs for more honest hard working people who would then buy those surplus houses. No, they just would not be able to understand common sense.

The problem is that these layoffs involve the most junior employees who in many cases were hired because there is a giant pile of senior deadwood in most agencies that won't do any useful work but can't be fired because of the !&%#$?@! unions. Some of the junior people are go-getters that are excellent at getting the job done.

Even though in many cases I would disagree that that particular job needs to be done at all, it sure makes no sense laying off good junior workers while paying way bigger salaries to the old deadwood to just sit there. The most some of that deadwood scum will do is spend their days explaining why they are too busy to take an actual assignment.

A Governor with any brass at all should target the government employees union and expose the theft of tax money that occurs daily due to 20% of California government employees not doing a lick of useful work.

This should give us a clue:

Higher Ed Instructional Employees -- 21,985
Higher Ed Other Employees ----------- 84,195

Is the function of higher education "Instructional" or "Other"? This is bleeping absurd ...

Add elimination of the overbearing environmental regulations and those businesses might just return — or others choose to build/relocate.
All of which would create new revenue for government. Silly little common sense arguments that seem to be lost in Sacramento.

Interesting ...

When you back out the state government higher education full-time numbers from your earlier post you get for local government higher education:

Local Gov't Higher Ed Instructional Employees -- 19,889
Local Gov't Higher Ed Other Employees ----------- 28,566

If state government higher ed ran as "efficiently" as local government higher ed, they should employ as full-time:

State Gov't Higher Ed Instructional Employees -- 21,985
State Gov't Higher Ed Other Employees ----------- 31,576

Since the actual state government full-time higher ed employees are:

State Gov't Higher Ed Instructional Employees -- 21,985
State Gov't Higher Ed Other Employees ----------- 84,195

we should put local higher ed people in charge of state higher ed and lay off the difference in "other" full-time employees: 52,619 people. Including benefits that would save a quick $4-5B per year.

When you really look at state spending numbers, you find how outrageous the claims of the California Teachers Assoc are.

Year after year... same thing.

We need to abolish public employee unions.

No, I think it’s closer to 20 million people working for the federal government, less the military. The numbers are so massive, and convoluted it’s hard to get an accurate number.

If you have an updated list, and link, I’d like to see it.
