NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The upward trend in firearms sales continued in April, marking the sixth consecutive month of significant increases.
Data released by the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported 1,225,980 checks in April 2009. This figure is a 30.3 percent increase from the 940,961 reported in April 2008.
FBI background checks are required under federal law for all individuals purchasing either new or used firearms from federally licensed retailers. The checks serve as a gauge of actual sales but do not reflect the actual number of firearms sold, since, following a background check, a customer may decide not to purchase a firearm or may purchase more than one firearm.
The April increase follows a 29.2 percent gain in March and rises of 23 percent in February, 28 percent in January, 24 percent in December and 42 percent in November when a record 1,529,635 background checks were performed.
The increase in NICS checks coincides with a rise in excise taxes reported by firearms manufacturers, another indicator of firearm sales.
Yeah, but try to find some ammo for your new firearm......
Anyone have any idea what proportion of all firearms transfers via a NICS background check are sales of new weapons vs. resales of used weapons?
I’m done shopping.
I’m not a gun nut, but I saw last year that it was a good time to “gun up”. But I failed to do it. Now I’m kicking myself.
But Smith Wesson took a dive from the mid $7’s to $5 something. I think I read they’re going to make a new stock offering, so I guess that’s what it’s about.
I always need to buy more ammo.
Depending on what you are looking for, there are still good deals and decent inventory out there.
saw some nice deals for .223 ammo on gunbroker.com!!!!
I already have a shotgun (12ga). Only firearm at this point.
Looking to pick up a pistol and a rifle. Like I said, I’m no aficionado, so I’m not picky.
Rifle should be suited for defense and survival hunting (I don’t hunt but if I needed to I darn sure would). Pistol ought to have decent stopping power and it would be nice if Mrs. Tick could shoot it without any problems, too.
One requirement would be “readily available” ammo (whatever passes for “readily available” these days).
Any suggestions what to look for? Tks
Great pistol for a good price. Same as the Beretta, made in Turkey now
Me too! But I am not done BUYING! My April gun purchase was not "recorded" in NICS, though - nor will my May gun purchase!
S&W 357 Magnum revolver which is versatile and powerful. Shoots 38 Special, 38 Special (P) and 357 Magnums.
Owner to owner... NO nics backround check...
I always buy ammo, monthly. I put an order in last week for a S&W Model 29 44 Magnum with 6.5” barrel.
I wasn’t referring to “owner to owner” - I was referring to firearms which have been sold as used weapons to FFL dealers, and are then resold by the dealer to another customer.
I’m wondering how many of those NICS checks correspond to increases in the “privately-held inventory”.

Yeah, it shoots it, but can you *buy* it? ;-)

Go to the site, and click the link to see the latest excise tax data.
I agree with DarthVader on the .357. Perfect one size fits
all gun. Could easily be used for survival hunting too.
A bolt action rifle in .308 or .30-06 would be a good choice. A 30-30 lever action is also a versatile rifle.
These calibers are as available as any others right now.
