The state Assembly has passed a bill requiring prison authorities to consider inmates' gender identity when making housing decisions.
Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a San Francisco Democrat, says his bill is needed because studies show gay and transgender inmates are vulnerable to physical and sexual assaults behind bars.
He urged lawmakers to support his bill as a way to reduce prison violence. The bill was adopted on a 60-8 vote on Monday, with no lawmakers speaking against it. It now heads to the state Senate.
The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation assigns housing based on inmates' physical gender, even if prisoners identify themselves as transgender.
Bump.
Since inmates are only going to get raped in prison (sometimes with full knowledge by prison staff), they should get to pick the sex of their cellmate.
This ruling should hold only if heterosexual men are also permitted to be locked up in heterosexual womens’ prison.

If California can get this transgendered inmate issue cleared up, the decline and imminent bankruptcy of the state will be a piece of cake.

All of them have their share of same sex relations going on behind bars (or under the thumb of wardens/guards who coerce sex from inmates).

instead of granting special rights to freaks, how about ending prison violence by simply make a prison within the prison?
called solitary confinement, once a prisoner creates problems in general population, they get solitary. simple, cheap, effective. If wardens enforced this, there would no longer be prison gang violence, adn prisoners calling the shots from the inside for their gangs. Just lock them up solitary, for years if need be.
only well behaved prisoners deserve the privilage of being allowed to interact with others. we dont need disipline problems in prison, we need swift sure lock down of bad guys, total isolation of trouble makers. whos running these prisons anyway????

Prison guards have encouraged racism and violence among the prisoners for decades. Keeps them busy infighting rather than directing anger at the guards.
The Democrats and Pravda media are doing the same to the GOP, creating infighting.
Let me get this straight (no pun intended): a guy who lops off his dick voluntarily is suddenly concerned about sexual assault?
One cell? ONE? How insensitive of you! Don't you know that there's overcrowding in the prison system already?
I say to open all of the cell doors, and remove the guards from the interior - just limit the entire prison population to the prison grounds. And, since there's a basic right to self-defense, issue them freshly sharpened shivs (maybe even 2 or 3 apiece - we want to be compassionate, you know). Treat others as you, yourself would like to be treated - and certainly a just and orderly society will result within the prison walls. :>)
