Senators are considering limiting but not eliminating the tax-free status of employer-provided health benefits to help pay for President Barack Obama's overhaul plan and provide coverage to 50 million uninsured Americans.
Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., said Tuesday that there are no easy options. Senators began grappling with how to finance guaranteed coverage for all Americans, even as independent experts put the costs at about $1.5 trillion over 10 years.
Obama sees a world in which doctors and hospitals compete to offer quality service at lower costs, and the savings help cover the uninsured. Turning that vision into reality remains the biggest challenge for the president and his backers, because hard cash not just ideas is required to cover upfront costs of expanding coverage.

Once again, wealth redistribution. If you work, you pay more taxes to cover those who do not.
This socialism just gets stupider and stupider.
It’s like a pebble rolling down a hill and developing into a massive landslide, and it’s about to slam into the foundation of the USA.
Don’t be silly, folks....Chairman Obama gave us our word that nobody making under $250,000 would see their taxes raised. We can sleep easy knowing we have the good word of our Dear Leader on that.
That is the biggest bunch of BS I've seen in months. The only world Zero sees is one in which he has absolute dictatorial control.
The problem these idiots are bumping into, is that when it comes to taxing health care benefits, some of the best benefits in the Country go to Union employees, many of which are also some of the highest paid workers in the Nation. There is no way in hell that the Unions are going to agree to any kind of Federal tax increase, especially not on their benefits.
Wasn’t it the Obamanites who criticized John McCain when he brought up this option? Looks like their going to take his idea (taxing benefits) AND then add their own other taxation ideas on top of that.
Higher taxes ... Soviet-style health care ... sounds good to me!

Well, they’ve one-upped the Jimmuh Carter TAX and SPEND failure...
Now we’ve got SPEND and TAX... dumped on the kids. What the hell happened to the party of the chilrun?
What? Pay for it? I thought it was going to be free???

Did I do the /s right?
Hey, I’ve got a novel idea. How about if I pay for my own health care. That way, the government doesn’t have to raise my taxes.

On a positive note....democrats simply cant resist turning the heat up on the water to get it to boil faster....the frog will notice and jump out...
This is a full court press on every pet issue they have..they simply cant help themselves.it’s going to be a classic over reach..
“when you understand the nature of s thing...you know what it’s capable of”
Last year, I got a $600 tax rebate. This year, I only got a $400 tax rebate. Thus, my taxes for this year will automatically be $200 higher than last year. We are already paying more.
The could regulate the trial lawyers. HA HA!
Keep in mind...corporations don’t pay taxes. They pass the cost off to their customers, who pass it along to their customers, and so on, until the END USER (you and I) ultimately pay the bill in form of higher prices.
It’s time to take back the country.
If we must have an income tax, I see no reason to exempt certain forms of income. The tax favoritism for health insurance benefits creates a foolish over consumption, misallocation of resources, and inflated prices.
If an employer gave you unlimited free ice cream, don’t you think many employees might eat a bit more than was sensible?

Well, that’s PMSNBC for you. They seriously expect a government takeover to promote competition, quality service and lower costs? They are either totally deranged, or totally sociopathic to espouse such bald-faced lies.
What lunatic wrote this article, the claim that socialism involves competing to lower costs, but that this requires huge “up front” money?
What the hell does that even mean in a sane world? Massive amounts ARE invested in the current free market system (to the extent it isn’t already regulated) and there is competition which is what brings enormous medical resources into existence.
What they really want to do is REDUCE the number of resources, eliminate competition, and raise huge tax monies to pay for that rear end backwards way of doing things.
