Elderly Couple Separated by Socialists
The Atlas Society - The Center for Objectivism ^ | May 8, 2009 | Edward Hudgins

If you want to know what to expect from the Democrats’ plans for total government control of health care—and government control of everything else for that matter—consider the case of Terry Kaide, 87, and her husband Sidney, 89, both of Hawaii, Barack Obama’s state of origin.

For two years this couple was not allowed to live together in the same residential care home. Why? Because government regulations allow two patients paid for by Medicaid but only one privately-paying patient to reside in that facility at the same time. This rule was meant to ensure that there are enough beds for poorer patients, who require government Medicaid funds. (Note here the moral mentality of the politicians who made this rule: If you can pay your own way, the government should limit your choices, to make the situation “fair.”)

For two years officials tried to figure out a way to get around their own stupid, tangled, and inexcusable rules. Finally, the Hawaiian state legislature passed a bill that created exemptions for married couples and others. So the good news is the Kaides are back together again.

And perhaps it’s also good news that this case could alert Americans to what their lives will be like if they further surrender their freedom to run their own lives to elites in Congress and the White House.

Already most government money comes with nooses attached to our necks. Schools that accept government funds or enroll students receiving government funds must sign on to a long list of rules; Hillsdale College and Grove City College are two schools that actually opted out by refusing to take any federal funds or students receiving such funds. Instead, those schools generously provide private scholarships.

The federal government collects gasoline taxes and then ransoms back the revenue …

“Why do we warehouse our old? “

For 60 years the ease of travel in this country allowed for geographic separation of families as the kids grew into adults. Their kids have been raised in it and coupled with mainstream culture that isn’t nuclear family oriented, we’ve created a society that casts-off old and worn out things.

(excluding those defy mainstream culture)

Did they want to live together? Did anyone ask them?.

Probably they missed each other very much, almost like death in the family. In which case, needless separation was cruel.

We “warehouse our old” because current advances in medicine mean that home-care may involve a 24-hour routine of diapering, turning, and feeding that could go on for 10-20 years.

In the “old days” of granny being cared for at home, she helped with the children and cooking, and then one day broke her hip, got pneumonia, and died.

I am NOT saying that the elderly have a “duty to die”. But you can’t equate the past with the present.

The old don’t get warehoused in my family! The young don’t get daycared either.
There’s a downside. I’m too busy looking after both, to get out often, find myself a husband and start having kids. But I am willing to pay that price rather than abandon my existing family to a nursing home and a boarding school.

In many households both parents must work to make ends meet. Many have school-aged kids as well. If their elderly parents cannot live independently on their own because of illness or the ravages of old age and need constant attention, assisted living facilities provide this service.

I know quite a few individuals—elders and their children—in such situations. “Warehousing” with its negative connotation does not accurately describe the situation. The children of such elders can and do visit the parents often and the elders get medical and other care that their children couldn't provide.

I really doubt if a couple their age put their children in day care.

Get the government out of healthcare and elderly care.

There is simply NO Constitutional authority for this crap. It’s time to rein in the government and return it to the Constitutional boundaries formulated by the founders.

That’s noble of you. I work with a woman who’s done the same thing, she’s now of an age that men and marriage don’t even remotely appear on the horizon. She’s not a very happy woman.

This is so silly it is funny.

First, why live in a government home, if you can afford privite care? And in-home care for two elderly patients in in all cases, less expensive than care in a government home.

Next, the beaurocrats have not met my wife.

The last thing they would hear is, “Oh, bother - how do I reload this dang thing?”

Exactly the point! Healthcare’s not the government’s business. And it’s the federal regulations through Medicare and Medicaid that have created most of the problems to begin with.
