KOMSOMOLSK-ON-AMUR, May 11 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian deputy prime minister said Monday that flight tests of a fifth-generation fighter will start in Russia by the end of 2009.

"By the end of this year, the plane will rise into the air and flight tests will begin," Sergei Ivanov told journalists after a shipbuilding meeting in the Far East, adding that serial production will start in 2010.

Russia's advanced multirole fighter is being developed by the Sukhoi aircraft maker, part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), along with India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), under a preliminary intergovernmental agreement signed in October 2007.

The first prototype is scheduled to make its maiden flight before the end of 2009.

Oh, so that little fright flight over NYC the other day was just a dry run for the Russians?

The question is if they will have enough money to build them in quantity. We can barley field a few squadrons of F-22s. And Russia's economy is based on high oil prices. If those stay low they are going to be hard pressed to build a fleet of new missile subs, new AIP diesel subs, aircraft carriers, 5th gen fighters, a new generation of ICBMS, a new main battle tank and all the other projects that they keep sending out press releases about. A few cool prototypes are not going to defend a landmass that large. Whatever Russian builds will need to be supplied in quantity.

Actually, the question is if they CAN build a 5th generation aircraft. Saying you will build one and actually having the ability to do so, is very different.

Thus, the solution for failed socialism always seems to be more socialism.

I don't know about the barley field but Obama is canceling the F-22, the plane which would have given us air superiority for years.

"but Obama is canceling the F-22, the plane which would have given us air superiority for years."

The American people better cancel the ACORN social worker lawyer whose child hood records in Indonesia said he was a Muslim starting in 2010 in Congressional elections and in 2012 with somebody who resembles a patriotic American.

We can then find the plans for F-22 and start again.

Yes we could but building a new aircraft requires a lot of start up cost in equipment and machining capability. Either the plants building that aircrqft would be closed or shifted to making some other. That is a significant cost in time and money.
