Americas Unfunniest Political Video (vanity)
Vanity | 05/10/2009 | MortMan

Posted on 05/10/2009 6:12:33 PM PDT by MortMan

Never before have I seen a political statement in the guise of an AFV nominee - much less a $100,000.00 finalist! And yet, here we are, with "main man" "yes we can" lovingly caroled to by a child too young to know anything about politics.

But AFV producers and writers surely know - and their decision to politicize a feel-good show has cost them a 19 year viewer. I cannot believe ABC is so dense as to misunderstand the appeal and durability of AFV, a 19 year sensation in the prime time TV business. It is inescapable, therefore, that the show, the network, and the sponsors are all tainted with a willingness to shill for "the one".

I went to their website and complained, although I know their self-righteous bubbles are likely far to scabrous to penetrate. I am livid.

I do not remember seeing a single, solitary AFV video that was political before the big winner tonight. Not a filler vid, not an "honorable mention", not a nominee, not a $10,000.00 winner, and certainly not a $100,000.00 winner. I will not see any more, either. I won't be watching.

You say you don’t remember a single AFV video that was political before this one, but I can remember about six years ago some broad turned in a video of her two year old and you could hear her off camera going “kitty” and the kid would smile and “puppy” and the kid would smile and then “George Bush” and the kid made some horrible face that looked like he was going to throw up. That turned ME off AFV permanently. (BTW is that commie Bettinger? Berringer? still the “host”? AFV went in the toilet after Bob Saget left, as far as I’m concerned...)

There was a child who was coached on catchphrases for the Presidents.

George Washington: “I cannot tell a lie.”

Abraham Lincoln: “Four score and seven years ago”

Ronald Reagan: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

(So far so good)

George W. Bush: (some stupid comment, and an idiotic laugh - I can’t recall what the comment was)

George H.W. Bush: “Read my lips, no new taxes”

(Those were bad enough, but now for the piece that has me fuming)

(Mom says enthusiastically) “And for our main man, President Obama?”

The child replies “YES, WE CAN! YES, WE CAN! YES, WE CAN!”

I’m not sure if the video is up anywhere yet - this was the new Mother’s Day edition - a brand new show.

I have never, ever yelled at the TV during AFV before.

I honestly don’t recall that video. I have watched this show from its inception with regularity (although the Fugelsang/Fuentes years were pretty bad).

Not any more, though...

Do you mean VFW? What is going on here? Did the Pope nominate Ms. California for sainthood?

AFV stands for “America’s Funniest (Home) Videos”.

(I’m a member of the VFW and don’t have any issues understanding the difference between them.)

Mom did a good job of coaching. What do you expect from ABC?

I agree, it wasn’t worth any money at all.

“America’s Funniest Video” It is a 19 year prime-time show built on funny or amazing video clips sent in by viewers.

And you expected an un-coached two year old doing presidential tag lines? I thought that little kid was amazing, and kudos to his parents for doing a great job with their child.

man-o-man conservatives hurt ourselves when we find fault with a funny little sketch like this, and attribute its win to the politics of the network.

To much crying from our side.

Coaching a two year old..that is pretty funny.

>>To much crying from our side.<<

I’m not crying at all. I gave the Mom kudos for coaching. Where are the tears?

My thing is, it’s not funny. It’s coached. We are HUGE AFV fans. We have been known to catch it at 8 on WGN then again at 10 on ABC Family. What we dislike is when some kid who is coached for a couple months wins over some genuinely funny, off the cuff video.

It’s supposed to be America’s Funniest Home Videos, Not America’s Most set up Videos.

The video was cute in my opinion. Nice kid, mom who I don’t agree with, but I could see one of my girls at that age doing a Sarah Palin routine.

BUT it wasn’t worth any money. It was a great filler video.

Yeah, the only thing that turned me off was when the mom said: “Now what did our main man say?”

The kid did pretty good really

Honestly, I hate when any of these kids are made to do something and then it’s pegged as cute. It’s not.

Or the crass ones. The 100,000 dollar winner that had the girl about to do a ballet move and she breaks wind. She says, “Oops I farted. Ballerina’s fart too.” I just don’t find that funny. Not the idea that she passed gas, that can be funny but the whole parents in the background laughing at this five year old being crude.

Now did you ever see the one where there is a girl about 10 with her little sister in the tub full of bubbles. The older girl says, “Watch this” and dunks her head in the water. At the same time, the little one says, “Ooops I foofed.” (almost the same as the above only not so crass). The older girl picks her head up, looks at the camera and says, “Oh that’s just not right.”

THAT one, I nearly died over.
