And I say "HURRAY FOR THAT!". I can read FreeRepublic on my handheld, I can load pages on anyone's computer with speed unmatched by the "fancier" formatted blogs.

As far as I'm concerned, FreeRepublic's format is THE BEST for this sort of thing. If FR ever adopts the cluttered, ad-ridden crap formats of these other sites, I'll be reading it a lot less.

I LOVE the speed of fr....it is fast... I too can read it on hand held, and no annoying popup ads, and last but not least..NO time consuming, boggling 3rd party junk downloading... tracking banners/cookies.

I often read FreeRepublic using Lynx, a text only browser, and it works fine. I suppose we could always bash those fancy sites because they are not as Section 508 accessible.
