Entertainer Danny Gans had high blood pressure for years and a history of heart problems in his family, his longtime manager said today.
Chip Lightman said Gans, who died May 1 at age 52 three months into his long-term deal at the Encore hotel, really watched his health, knowing it (heart trouble) was in his family.
Lightman acknowledged he was heard all the rumors but said he is not concerned about what might surface in the toxicology tests that could take several more weeks before the Clark County coroners office releases the results.
"I can swear on a Bible I never saw Danny involved with drugs, said Lightman. I cant imagine that being a factor. In my 18 years hes never done one thing in front of me. Ever. Id be surprised.
KVBC-TV, Channel 3 entertainment reporter Alicia Jacobs, a close friend of Gans, said she was aware of Gans high blood pressure.
But he took very good care of himself because of it and he certainly had it under control as far as I knew, said Jacobs.
He wouldnt even eat fried food, so youd think he wouldnt be involved in any kind of risky behavior," she added.
"He was an athlete in a lot of ways," said Jacobs. "Who amongst us, that work out on regular basis, doesnt have a constant ache or pain. Im sure he took Motrin. I think thats about as adventurous as he ever got.
A week before Gans died at his Henderson home, the singing impressionist made a cryptic comment to Jacobs during a telephone conversation about his new music video "What a Wonderful World."
Gans told her, When I die and you do my obituary piece, it will be the most brilliant work of your career.'"
My guess is drug overdose. I am not a doctor, but I watched a lot of Quincy...and his sidekick, Sam.
Danny Gans' final act leaves mystery
"Danny Gans had just finished his show Wednesday when his manager Chip Lightman sent a text message."Apollo show. Are you OK. No curtain?"
Something didn't feel right to Lightman.
Looking back, "that was the scariest thing," Lightman said Friday, still in shock hours after the death of Gans at age 52.
A creature of habit, Gans rarely ended with "The Curtain Falls," Bobby Darin's favorite closer.
Through most of his thousands of shows as a 13-year Las Vegas headliner, Gans preferred ending with "Apollo," which featured snippets of songs by Sammy Davis Jr., Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles and others.
No one will ever know for certain, but just maybe Gans knew something was amiss and sent a message through Darin's curtain closer at the Encore theater.
My guess is heredity. He may have bought himself ten extra years by taking care of himself.
But, was he taking medication and seeing a doctor regularly?
Another omen ping.
Sam: Hey Quince where ya going?
Quincy: I’m going on a safari to prevent a Murrrrderrr.
I have to admit that I never heard of this guy before he died. I then looked him up and realized what a talen he was. Pity he died. What a loss for his family and Las Vegas.
The last time I was in Vegas I was too busy with a conference to break away and see him live. Now I never will.
If you take proper medication, the high blood pressure generally goes to the normal range. Was he NOT taking meds? If so, he was asking for trouble.
Lack of Vitamin D and Omegas....IMHO....
Saw him with friends last August. What an awesome act.
God bless his family.
Does one ever get off of HBP meds?
I did get off them. I also had gout too. Lost 25 pounds and now I walk 2 - 3 times a week around the lake. That’s 3 1/2 miles. Blood pressure is way down and no gout. I need to get more serious about the walking and diet again so I can lose more. It can be done.
Some can. Getting weight down can help in a lot of cases, but some folks are genetically set up to have very high BP and losing weight is not much help. Other medical problems can cause hypertension, too.
Walking around a lake cannot be too painful and the results - gout and HBP gone. It’s a win-win. Seems many medical problems can be helped by walking/exercise. It’s a beautiful day here today - a good day for me to start again. Thanks for the info.
Thanks. Watched the video of Danny - he was a young 52. They say laughter is the best medicine - yet, it didn’t seem to work for him. Sad.
