Forget Bush — Not Reagan
NewsMax ^ | 5/7/2009 | Michael Reagan

Posted on 05/09/2009 9:14:34 AM PDT by ReformationFan

If some media reports are correct — a dangerous assumption nowadays when media skepticism has given way to unquestioned Obama worship — former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says the GOP needs to abandon nostalgia for the Reagan era.

I’m inclined to doubt the accuracy of that report since Jeb Bush probably was the best governor Florida ever had and one who clung ferociously to the Republican principles my father, Ronald Reagan, exemplified.

Even if he did say something silly like that, my argument with him and Mitt Romney and the other participants in the so-called listening tour is not about my dad, but about the absurdity of a listening tour designed to tutor Republican bigwigs on what the public really wants from government.

My short answer is that I want the government to get the hell out of our way and let us act like the free people our founding fathers wanted us to be, not like subjects of an all-knowing, all-powerful federal government.

The listening tour is nothing but Republican gimmickry. The reality is that, had they been listening during the past four years of the Bush presidency, they would have seen the disaster of 2006 coming and they would have seen the catastrophe of 2008 coming.

Instead, they turned a deaf ear to the Republican conservatives not only on Capitol Hill but also to those out across America.

They lost in 2006 and 2008 because they stopped listening to the “nostalgia” for the conservative principles which guided my dad’s administrations.

Good editorial from the good son of Ronald Reagan.

There are many things that I more than happily forget Bush on but I will NEVER forget that he kept us safe for over 7 years following the one of the worst attack on US Soil and despite everyones belief that another attack was imminent.

Lots of people here who disagree with him and can't see the damage the Bush brothers have done.

It's too late of course. The Stalinists in this illegitimate administration are working overtime, and unlike the Bliss Ninny Carter administration, these guys know what they are doing - real live Bolshevik Thugs, Chicago style.

The damage will take at least 2 decades to undo, if ever. Reagan may be an icon in people's minds, but by the time these SOB's get done with us, the ropes will be tighter than anything FDR ever tied.

But I would agree with Mike: first you have to relegate the opportunist Northeastern Liberal Republican Bush family to the ash heap of history.

Jeb Bush was indeed a good governor of Florida. And he probably would have been a better president than G.W. But G.W. was the older brother, so it was his “turn” first.

In any case, whatever we think of Jeb, it’s obvious that there can be no more Bushes in the White House. The voters would never support a third Bush, regardless of how he presented himself. I think Jeb understands that.

But of course, this editorial is correct. G.W. got off to a reasonably good start, except for a regretable tendency to be weak on spending and weak on removing malign leftists at the top levels of his agencies. But he most definitely went astray after being re-elected, more and more RINOs started coming out of the woodwork with his aid & assistance, and things went downhill from there.

· By all means, let’s have the conservative movement “…leave Reagan behind…” and invent some sappy, empty phrases — like “Hope” and “Change” —
that the ACORN morons can get a grip on and they’ll flock to the GOP.
Here are some that might work:
WHAT THIS COUNTRY NEEDS IS MORE BUSH!
A CHICKEN IN EVERY POT.
2 CARS IN EVERY GARAGE.
A FREE LATE-TERM ABORTION FOR EVERY UNWANTED PREGNANCY.
A GAY BABY-SITTER OR TEACHER FOR EVERY CHILD.
FREE MONEY FOR EVERYONE.
DEFICITS ARE OUR FRIEND.
MORE LIKE THE DEMOCRATS THAN THE DEMOCRATS.
WHAT THIS COUNTRY NEEDS IS MORE MUSLIMS.
KISS A TYRANT — KICK AN ALLY.
A FREE ILLEGAL HISPANIC HOUSEBOY IN EVERY HOME.
Yeah, that’s the ticket. Let’s hurl ALL the traditional and time-tested values on which America became, in under 2 centuries, that shining city on a hill, a beacon of freedom and a world leader over the side to appeal to the ravening masses of MTV, VHI, government school indoctrinated imbiciles that ACORN inticed to the polls with a pack of smokes and a pint of Ripple.
Sounds like a HELL OF A PLAN TO ME!!!
Feel free to add YOUR suggestions.

I’ll repeat what I said a couple of days ago. Jeb Bush put his foot in his mouth, took a bite, and thought he was eating steak.

W ushered in the era of TARP and laid the foundation for the radical government intervention in the private sector that is going on today.

That is unforgivable.

You don't think "THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM!" would be a good campaign slogan...;^)

Buchanan writes:

Why is the party in trouble? Simple. Dubya got a hold of the keys, got high on neocon hooch, and crashed and rolled the family SUV.

He launched an unnecessary war against a country that had not attacked us. With his utopian No Child Left Behind scheme and his Medicare drug plan, he did his passable imitation of LBJ, and blew a hole in the budget.

Touting globalism, he presided over the loss of one in every four U.S. manufacturing jobs and ran up $5 trillion in trade deficits. He refused to defend the Mexican border against an invasion, then pushed an amnesty for the invaders.

This was no Reaganite. This was the neocons’ apprentice.

How does the party reconnect with Middle America? How does it win back the Reagan Democrats who went home disgusted?

Bush is more like Nixon than Reagan and Republicans still defend Nixon, too. The era of Nixon/Bush is over...the Republican party must move on.

Agree 100%! Bush kept the US safe, and FINALLY dropped bombd where they should have been (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq), instead of Sudan and Kosovo!

... former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says the GOP needs to abandon nostalgia for the Reagan era.

And it was only a little over a year ago every Republican presidential candidate wannabe was falling all over himself claiming "I'm the next Reagan!" "No, I'm the next Reagan!" "I'm the next Reagan!" "No! ..."

Jeb Bush was indeed a good governor of Florida.
What did he do?

You, obviously don't live in Florida or you'd already know what he did. He had to do about the same as Reagan had to do cleaning up after four years of Carter.

First and foremost he undid the liberal damage done by his predecessor, Lawton Chiles caused during his terms in office.

That alone was plenty.

He also reversed the state's gun control laws allowing concealed carry and the "castle doctrine" which allows you to protect your property.

The list goes on and on.

You’d think Hillary! made the phrase “listening tour” toxic for Republican use. I mean, really! Listening tour? What a lame sequel.

I've been in Florida long enough to know that the state has a weak governor system. It's difficult for a governor to do much here.

Did Jeb originate and pass the Castle Doctrine gun law or did the legislature do it?

At least you answered. The other people I've asked about Jeb's record don't respond.

The list goes on and on.

Feel free to be specific. It should be easy with a least that "goes on and on."

BTW, where does Jeb stand on offshore drilling, and illegal aliens?
