Gay Porn Star Withdraws from Grove City College (student pursuing legal options after suspension)
WYTV ^ | 5/8/2009

When 22 year old Grove City College student John Gechter began modeling for the porn industry, he was warned that eventually he would be discovered by the public-at-large. Less than 24 hours after a fellow student found the online images, they were emailed all over campus and sent to the college administration. “It’s a conservative school, so juicy gossip like this would fly around campus quickly,” said Gechter in a lengthy phone interview with our newsroom.

Gechter said school officials acted quickly and gave him three choices: Withdraw, be suspended, or appeal. “I didn’t like any of the three choices,” said Gechter. The molecular biology major has assembled a team of lawyers and filed an appeal. “I never considered the school would kick me out for doing something legal.”

Grove City College, a conservative Christian school, says Gechter’s behavior was “contrary to the values of the college.” The school’s mission statement can be read here: http://www.gcc.edu/About_GCC.php

Thursday afternoon, the college released this statement:

The statement below will be the only comment from the College regarding this issue. "The student's suspension resulted from his involvement in the adult pornography industry. The student acknowledged that he was employed in the adult entertainment industry and that he knew that violated the student code of conduct. Throughout this process, his sexual orientation was not a factor in the decision. Since that decision, he has voluntarily chosen to withdraw from Grove City College." End of statement.

It comes as no surprise to Gechter that most Grove City students take the side of the school administration. “Most of the college is very conservative, very closed minded.” He admits his behavior is in conflict with the code of conduct in the student manual, but feels his 16 month suspension is more than it should be. Gechter says he faces school charges of sexual misconduct, participating in the public display of pornography, and adhering to standards which do not follow the mission or values of the college.

Gechter, who works under the online name of Vincent DeSalvo, began modeling at the age of 19. During a shoot he was approached by an agent from the porn industry. “They told me I had the perfect body for pornography,” said Gechter. Lured by the considerable promise of money, “3-5 thousand dollars per scene,” Gechter entered the industry at the age of 20. An online search of his porn name instantly brings up many of his sites, all designed for an internet audience.

From here, Gechter is pursuing legal options. He will probably transfer his credits to another school. “I already have 135 credits which in most schools is enough to graduate. Hopefully I only have to take a few more classes,” says Gechter. He is undecided whether he will remain in the porn industry.

I wonder if the Gay and Lesbian Alliance will pursue a lawsuit on the student's behalf...

This will make for an interesting landmark case.

If this becomes a national case, this will not be the first time Grove City College became involved in a national case. They fought a case for college independence from Federal Government interference which went all the way to the Supreme Court before.

With Obama in power and a liberal justice sure to be nominated and confirmed, it might not bode well for the college.

Grove City Suspends Student for His Porn Career

Grove City College has suspended John Gechter, a molecular biology major, for his work in gay pornography, The Herald reported. Gechter had kept his job — which he says he needed to pay tuition — a secret. But the newspaper reported that another student spotted a photograph of him online, and forwarded the shot to many on the campus. College officials say that Gechter violated their code of conduct and that they are worried about the dangers he might face in porn. But Gechter told the newspaper: “I absolutely believe the college violated my rights. ... They [suspended] me based on my occupation. I was not doing anything illegal.”

Hey, if the Miss California pageant can kick someone out because of remarks they believe tarnishes their reputation, a private college that does not receive federal funding can do the same.

UPDATE: GCC student suspended for off-campus participation in online gay porn

To Grove City College, John Gechter was a bright young student majoring in molecular biology.

But to his online audience, he was Vincent DeSalvo, a baby-faced rising star in the gay pornography industry.

Both worlds unexpectedly crashed into each other two weeks ago after his online persona was discovered at GCC.

“A student on campus was browsing inappropriate content online and recognized me on a (pornography) Web site,” said the 22-year-old Philadelphia native. “He copied and pasted some images and sent an e-mail to some friends. GCC is a pretty small school, so the e-mail spread like wildfire.”

Gechter began his career in gay pornography late in his sophomore year, two years ago. During that time, Gechter successfully kept Vincent DeSalvo a secret from his life at GCC. No one knew about his off-campus job, not even his roommate at the Colonial Apartment complex.

That ended the night of April 23 when the first e-mail revealing his online identity was sent out. By the next morning, at least two-thirds of the student population had received the e-mail. So did school administration.

GCC officials have decided to indefinitely suspend Gechter for one year for his activities, pending his decision to appeal to the provost.

“I absolutely believe the college (has) violated my rights,” Gechter said. “They (suspended) me based on my occupation. I was not doing anything illegal.”

But according to GCC Communications Director Amy Clingensmith, Gechter’s involvement in the porn industry “exhibited behavior contrary to the values” of the college.

Ms. Clingensmith said the college’s main concern was for Gechter.

“Clearly something happened since he’s been here for four years that led him down this unfortunate path,” she said. “We want to get him out of that type of life.”

But according to Gechter, acting in porn helped him pay tuition at GCC.

The "other student" is a homo, too!

"Spotted a photo of him online"?

Riiiiight.

Good for Grove City. At least there are some colleges sticking to their guns.

I have no idea what kind of porn he was involved in, nor do I wish to know. Seems to me he has a case. Sad to say, but how can he get out of this lifestyle if he doesn’t get his degree? Can no one work to improve their lives?

ok, fire away. (ducking for cover)

In theory you are right, but this might become a violation of human rights issue. It will be an issue of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. What's to stop the courts from equating suspension of his because of his work to violating a person because of the color of his skin ?

Such is what this country has become or is becoming...

This will be an interesting case that will have NATIONAL IMPLICATIONS for every private college and religious organization in this country. I just hope this student has enough good sense not to make himself the guinea pig or the "Jane Roe" of the gay community so to speak.

The gay and lesbian groups are gaming everything in sight to advance their cause. Lambda legal Foundation has a lot of very smart lawyers and their strategy seems to be to challenge everything and anything. I don’t think an action against Grove City will succeed, but it will garner them publicity and burn up a lot of Grove City’s budget in legal fees.

I am disappointed that no one seems to be recognizing that a Federal Constitutional Amendment will be necessary. Public opinion polling seems to show an essentially schizophrenic set of attitudes. From the same sample you can get both support for state actions (constitutional amendments at the state level) by a slight majority, and far less than a majority supporting for a Federal Constitutional Amendment. I think this shows where people could use a bit of education. There are many weaknesses in the state amendments that have been passed. The Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) will be repealed under Democratic majorities in Congress and at the request of Obama. Then you will have a wave of gay and lesbian couples flocking to the states where it is legal and then returning home to jam up the local legal picture with suits 9 ways from Sunday.

It has to be a Federal Constitutional Amendment prohibiting gay marriage and it needs to be soon. Wake up out there!

I am sure a lot of gay friendly companies will be willing to hire him. Heck, IBM, Disney and a whole heap of others will welcome him with open arms.

And he didn’t even have the common courtesy to offer them a reacharound first.

Seriously, dude...you knew going in (so to speak) that it was against the code of conduct and you did it anyway, and now you have the gall to complain the suspension’s too long? You’re lucky it’s just a suspension. Stop whining.

He can't do anything else?

(Cartoonish geezer voice) "Gee, Mildred. Do you remember the Great Depression? Why, my family was so poor that we all had to run out and do gay porn just to put food on the table."

Folks, if this becomes a national case, I hope Christians and conservatives band together to help the college. I am sure organizations like the ACLJ will be willing to help with the court case.

This college, together with Hillsdale College has been a shining example of how to thrive, be respected and offer top notch academics at low tuition ( a year's worth of board, lodging and tuition costs a mere $18,000 ) without asking Uncle Sam for any support.

If this case is lost ( assuming it goes national ), the implications for RIGHT OF ASSOCIATION and every private institution ( from schools to hospitals to religious organizations ) will be dire indeed. That will be the first step towards the killing of one of the freedoms we cherish -- the right to practice our faith.

hey, it was “gay” porn.....I asked y’all not to tell me that.......dang....TMI. So let him finish the semester and then transfer to another university. It’s not like there are not other gays at that university.....faculty and students. With our courts, I am doubtful the school would prevail in a courtroom. Just sayin’.
