Washington - US President Barack Obama telephoned Jacob Zuma on Friday to congratulate him on becoming South African president and urged Zuma to take a leadership role on the African continent, the White House said.
Obama praised South Africans for their "commitment to democracy" after more than three-quarters of the voting population took part in last month's elections, White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs said.
The ANC won 65.9% of the vote, and Zuma was elected president on Wednesday by the National Assembly. He will be inaugurated on Saturday.
Obama "encouraged president-elect Zuma to show strong regional leadership" and to help push for more democratic reforms in Zimbabwe.
Teleprompter involved?
Did Obama say, “You’ll do a great job Zuma”?
Or asked for some tips on how to run a socialist/communist country.
Or maybe how to manage multiple wives in the “old country” way.
Well, if anyone knows how to run a country it’s obama. Not
Or how to put down a whitey rebellion...
This guy currently has three wives. Another one of his committed suicide in 2000.
It’s like phoning Mugabe and wishing him well. South Africa is screwed with Zuma in power.
Here is Jacob Zuma on the campaign trail, singing his favorite song, “Bring me my machine gun.”

The guy is a 100% certifiable crook. God help South Africa.
At first I thought he was phoning Clinton’s gal Huma.
Huma Zuma — a match made in heaven.
Another ROP member with a thirst for blood?
So he ignores the actual superpowers and is cozying up to rulers of tinpot countries. Idiot.

“South Africa fears the worst from Jacob Zuma
At first pass, Mr Zuma is a far from impressive candidate for the job. He is an affable populist with no formal schooling, but an impressive trajectory through the ranks of the military wing of the liberation movement.
However, more recently, while serving as Mbeki’s deputy president, he found himself spending more time in the dock facing charges of corruption and rape than attending to affairs of state.
His testimony during the rape trial that, after having sex with someone who was HIV positive, he had taken a shower to reduce the risk of infection, beggars belief. And although he was acquitted of rape and the corruption case against him collapsed, his days in court are not over.”
