Gov. Charlie Crist named by blogger and the film 'Outrage,' citing closeted gay politicians
St. Petersburg Times ^ | May 08, 2009 | Eric Deggans

As Florida Gov. Charlie Crist considers whether to enter the competitive race to replace Sen. Mel Martinez, some public talk has turned to the issue of his sexuality, thanks to Outrage, an independent film focused on politicians who are accused of hiding their sexual orientation.

During this appearance on an Arlington, Va., cable newschannel, Crist's name surfaced during a conversation on Outrage. The film names Crist among several political figures alleged to be hiding their sexual orientation, using comments from people who claim to be past lovers in addition to other material.

The newschannels' segment featured blogger Mike Rogers, whose blogActive site features similar reports on political figures, and host Doug McKelway in a heated argument that distracts from some key questions which deserve an answer:

Does the movie make a strong case for its allegations against each subject, and were the subjects given a chance to respond?

Is it ethical to reveal a politician's private sexual orientation, just because someone feels their policies are anti-gay?

Is there a difference between a politician who does not reveal his/her sexual orientation and a politician who creates a public image different than his/her private life?

Is it fair to a require a politician who may be gay or bisexual to publicly acknowledge their sexual orientation when they are involved with legislation impacting gay or bisexual issues?

I'm not sure how I feel about these issues; there seem to be strong arguments on both sides. Making all this tougher to navigate is the GOP's longstanding demonization of gay people in electoral politics and the damage a politician can receive just by having his/her name included in these discussions.

That's fine, but the electorate does care and to win we need to get votes from them.

It is more important to win than who a would be politician sleeps with.

As you can see the Democrats are busy tearing apart the world's greatest country and there's no one around who can stop them unless we do it. Our gay blades will just have to keep it in their pants and not run for office for a few decades otherwise we are all doomed.

Crist is a RINO of the worst degree.

“Who cares what he does in the privacy of his bedroom as long as he votes for Conservative, pro-family-values issues”

Well since his record of voting for pro-family issues is pretty bad it is pretty much consistent with him being gay.

“You’re very right about Crist, but conservatives who oppose him should stay clear of his personal life.”

No they shouldn’t, if he’s lying about his personal life it is very pertinent to the issue at hand.

“As for the radical gay gestapo, what they do they do themselves.”

Oh you mean their pushing of gay marriage and teaching gayness to our children is really only hurting the gay people?

Bullpucky, conservatives have been silent and let the radical left dictate the issues. Its past time for that to stop.

The gasy mafia has a double standard. Protect and elevate gay Dem politicians and out and demean gay Republicans.

The same thing happens with black Republicans - see Clarence Thomas. This is to block any blacks or gays to opening their eyes to an alternative to voting Dem.

That’s why I wish someone like Tammy Bruce would step up and challenge the gay community to vote their values.

The "gay mafia" will stop at nothing.

But, in their zeal to point out their claim of "hypocrisy," among anti-gay politicians, (with their so called, "outings,"), they actually demonize the behavior that they're so radically driven to normalize.

Does that make sense?

Charlie Crist is a lousy RINO who was largely responsible for putting McCain over the top.

If this puts him out of the running for the Senate, I say well & good.

Crist loves Saint Petersburg(spends a lot of time here) and nobody in this town has ever considered Crist gay...now or ever. Gays don't like him because he supported the FL constitutional amendment stating that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Social conservatives hate him because he mopped the floor with his religious right opponent Tom Gallagher in the primary debates. Overall. he is a highly popular Governor here in Fl.

I used to hear about what a great conservative Crist was, but then I looked at his record and couldn't figure out how he could have been called a conservative. The rinos are diluting the brand and giving conservatives and Republicans a bad reputation.

All of these completely unfounded rumors and character assassinations are totally out of line. Everyone knows that there is a proven and infallible method for investigating the sexual orientation of any politician. Simply Google “Light in the Loafers”, or “Confirmed Bachelor”. Don’t forget the quotes. If you get a hit, then Bingo, Bango, Bongo case solved.

Libs will keep this up until they suffer real consequences for their antics.

I have no idea why more conservatives can’t wrap their minds around this straightforward concept.

I think these guys are ONLY going after Republicans. It's a hate thing not a "gay" thing. I'm surprised radical gays aren't burning crosses on the front lawns of these "outed" Republicans...

I think Phyllis Schlafly's son was a 40plus year old conservative lawyer when the media outed him, they went on a feeding frenzy for a while and then it seemed like your thought occurred to them and they let it die down.

I believe that he is still conservative.
