Gov. Charlie Crist named by blogger and the film 'Outrage,' citing closeted gay politicians
St. Petersburg Times ^ | May 08, 2009 | Eric Deggans

As Florida Gov. Charlie Crist considers whether to enter the competitive race to replace Sen. Mel Martinez, some public talk has turned to the issue of his sexuality, thanks to Outrage, an independent film focused on politicians who are accused of hiding their sexual orientation.

During this appearance on an Arlington, Va., cable newschannel, Crist's name surfaced during a conversation on Outrage. The film names Crist among several political figures alleged to be hiding their sexual orientation, using comments from people who claim to be past lovers in addition to other material.

The newschannels' segment featured blogger Mike Rogers, whose blogActive site features similar reports on political figures, and host Doug McKelway in a heated argument that distracts from some key questions which deserve an answer:

Does the movie make a strong case for its allegations against each subject, and were the subjects given a chance to respond?

Is it ethical to reveal a politician's private sexual orientation, just because someone feels their policies are anti-gay?

Is there a difference between a politician who does not reveal his/her sexual orientation and a politician who creates a public image different than his/her private life?

Is it fair to a require a politician who may be gay or bisexual to publicly acknowledge their sexual orientation when they are involved with legislation impacting gay or bisexual issues?

I'm not sure how I feel about these issues; there seem to be strong arguments on both sides. Making all this tougher to navigate is the GOP's longstanding demonization of gay people in electoral politics and the damage a politician can receive just by having his/her name included in these discussions.

It really cracks me up that the DemRats are now changing their tune and claiming that closeted gay politicians are somehow evil just because they don't endorse the gay agenda. Being a former Floridian, people have heard this garbage about Crist for years and elected him despite it. Who cares what he does in the privacy of his bedroom as long as he votes for Conservative, pro-family-values issues. I think the DemRats are showing their true desperation and hypocrisy by screaming about so-called sexual perversion.

He doesn't. He is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for Terri Schiavo's murder.

These RINOs could easily demolish their arguments just like you just did. But they don’t. Why?

I don't think he does stand with conservatives, does he? He was an early McPain advocate.

I don’t care all that much if the rumor about Crist is true, but I am disturbed at his public record. Republicans don’t need to recruit him to win the 2010 Senate race in Florida.

Gay Republicans should take a hint from what went on with Senator Craig and simply step aside from elective office.

Nothing personal about that but it's more important to WIN.

If we can’t get him out of the race based on his RINO record, let the gaystapo do the job. Crist is a menace.

In what universe is Charlie Crist considered a conservative? Certainly not this one.

I’m far more concerned about him being a hidden democrat.

He is a RINO and buddies with McCain, Mel, and Miss Lindsay Grahm-nesty that sassy southern belle.

The FL House voted for offshore drilling and it passed but Crist said he would veto it. The first thing he did after elected was convene a meeting on global warming. Jeb was a much better governor but Jeb is RINO-lite.

the GOP's longstanding demonization of gay people in electoral politics

Please cite one instance of such "demonization". And opposing redefinition of the term "marriage" does not count as "demonization".

You’re very right about Crist, but conservatives who oppose him should stay clear of his personal life. As for the radical gay gestapo, what they do they do themselves.

I disagree. The intent of movies like this, as well as the 'gay mafia', is to out republicans for a simple reason- they do not subscribe to the radical gay agenda. If they are parading around flaunting their sexuality, then they are deserved of scorn and contempt. Very few of those on the radical gay left believe anyone should be in the closet.

There's also the GOP's underlying association with Christianity. Its a matter of making an example of them to the point they are rendered contemptible by their 'own' kind, thus having to become part of the radical agenda.

Personally, if a homosexual is a conservative- meaning, pro life, pro military, pro 2nd amendment and a fiscal/social conservative, I don't care who or what they sleep with.

“He doesn’t. He is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for Terri Schiavo’s murder.”

OK, I was unaware of that but I know that he helped us at the time pass a bill to prevent homosexuals from adopting innocent kids. Florida is one of the few States where homosexuals can’t just adopt some impressionable child as though it is some playtoy. I give him credit for at least standing up to them on that. I don’t live in Florida any more so don’t know the current situation though.

This documentary seems incredibly invasive to Charlie Crist’s private life. Not to mention defamatory. “I think he’s gay even though he didn’t vote for gay marriage, all because of some rumors I heard somewhere, so I’m going to make a documentary and out him, even though my only evidence is hearsay.”

I don’t want Crist as a senator, but good lord.

Before he got married it might not have been a problem assuming he conducted himself in a modest, low key way like any other single public official should, but he is married now and that means it better not have been a sham to conduct a living, permanent lie and he better not cheat.
