Thanks...but it was true. We WEREN’T “Boy Scouts”...we actually got kicked out of a jamboree for throwing eggs instead of eating them for breakfast.
But even that helped me. I learned there were limits to what would be tolerated, even in an organization that was fairly tolerant because it knew boys were boys.

Without the Scouts, having a mostly uninvolved father (except for chore assignment and discipline), I don't know what I would have become. Much of what I am I attribute to the moral and ethical framework, the sense of husbandry for nature and training to fend for myself, provided by the Scouts.
Many of the enemies of what made the United States of America great are easily identified by their enmity and vilification of the Boy Scouts of America.

Much of what I am I attribute to the moral and ethical framework, the sense of husbandry for nature and training to fend for myself, provided by the Scouts. My dad was an Eagle Scout. He earned 42 merit badges. That was an example for me. He was also a naval officer. Most of my life, he was at sea. Mom took care of the daily household chores. I did the things my dad wasn't around to handle. That included installing a gas water heater, repairing the controller on the gas forced air heater (I rode my bike to National City to purchase the last controller in stock). I rode my bike to Sears in downtown Chula Vista to purchase a replacement spring for the garage door. It was "interesting" doing the install. I had little choice as dad's ship was in Hawaii and mom had flown out to visit for a few days. The industrious things I learned in scouting provided the skills and troubleshooting practice. BTW, I earned 3 merit badges during mom's trip to Hawaii.
I can safely say that making Eagle comes with lots of help from a devoted mother. Most of that was transportation to merit badge counselors. My mom even grabbed a stopwatch to help me practice the "disrobe in under 60 seconds" drill required in the lifesaving merit badge.

La Mesa to Chula Vista on bike.. dang.. never did that one.. rode to downtown a few times from Lake Murray I actually made the Chula Vista to La Mesa trip many times on my bike. The object of my affection was the Heathkit store. I've been fascinated by electricity and electronics since I was in kindergarten. Those long bike rides culminated in hours of solder smoke and nifty end products. Many were ham radio accessories. Others were computer boards.

Lake Murray to downtown San Diego or La Mesa? I've only visited Lake Murray twice while I lived in San Diego. The visits were during the summer and temperatures were approaching 110 degrees. We didn't stay long.

When I was working for PacBell, I would eat lunch at the Chicken Pie Shop or City Deli. Both were walking distance from the Robinson St central office. My PacBell office was at 525 B St. There were plenty of places to eat, but as a newly hired engineer, I didn't have much disposable income to burn eating in downtown restaurants. I saved my money and spent it at the local bookstore. Most of what I purchased was UNIX and C books. In time, that's where my career went.

I started with Pacific Telephone at 525 B St in April 1980. While at that office, I did much of the engineering that laid the foundation for the data center at 7337 Trade St. In May 1983, I moved to a new job in PREMIS/LAC at Trade St. That morphed into the SOAC/LFACS program in 1984. By Dec 1985, I was ready for a new challenge. The COSMOS/MIZAR hardware/software replacement was my baby as the senior UNIX support person. When the company decided that having a great stock price was better than being a first rate technical company, I joined 6,000 other employees in finding a greener pasture in Dec 1991. I have no regrets. The nearly 18 years I've spent with my current company have been outstanding.

Just found this through search. I know it’s an old post, but does anyone know what the outcome of this was?
Someone nailed it earlier: Start their own scouts if they don’t like it!!! Sheesh. “Hey, I don’t like what they preach in that church!!” Oh, well, then DON’T ENTER IT!!! Find another church you do like or start your own!!
What is WRONG with this country. Are they going to outlaw apple pie next?
