I was sitting on the Austrian border awaiting to maybe go to the Pacific. Thank you President Truman for the trip home.

Jon Stewart says Truman was a “war criminal” because you didn’t go to Japan and die.

Instead, Truman committed the “crime” of authorizing The Army to drop the A-bomb on Japan.

I have recordings of the uncut broadcasts of NBC Radio’s programming for that day; also for the D-Day landings and VJ Day. Absolutely fascinating to listen to.

Thank you for your service. It is hard to think of all of those men/boys that never had the chance to see the America that emerged over the next 60 years 1945 to 2005 - what a glorious time it was.

I was in Time Square NYC, in the crowd celebrating and listening to “Roger Young” and There’s a Star Spangled Banner Waving Some Where” being played over the speakers by the miniature Statue of Liberty that was on the square, (it was actually on the triangle.) I was 5 yrs old and that memory never left me. A couple of months later when the Empire of Japan surrendered my whole Brooklyn neighborhood went wild with celebrations.

My Dad, still living thank God, just had me do a little write up of some of his experiences in Dachau and Munich with the Thunderbirds (45th Infantry Division). The death camps like Dachau were still running all the way until Allied Troops breached the gates. A lot of the prisoners were so starved and weak that they still died after liberation in spite of medical attention.

As for the other half of the war, my Dad KNOWS that his Division was on the fast track for rebuilding and resupply in the US before going to Japan. It is my guess that neither my brother or myself would be here if that invasion had taken place and Japan would have been decimated and made a desert of destruction.

It was victory for half of Europe, the other half just traded one tyranny for another.
