Gov. Beverly Perdue asked for -- and received -- the resignation of N.C. Alcoholic Beverage Commission Chairman Doug Fox on Tuesday, just hours after newspapers provided Perdue's office with a copy of a racist photo illustration sent from Fox's e-mail address after last November's election.
The e-mail included an altered photo of the White House that turned the South Lawn into an enormous watermelon patch. The phrase, "There goes the neighborhood ..." was printed above the photo.
The e-mail was sent from Fox's law firm address Nov. 14 -- 10 days after Barack Obama was elected president. The message, which had been forwarded multiple times by others before reaching Fox, contained no text other than the subject line, "how true."

No one ever seems to ask the legislature this question:
Why is the state of North Carolina still in the liquor business, anyway? Private enterprise should be running this.
(
The Commonwealth of Virginia is still in the liquor business.
I know. It was kind of a rhetorical question. :)
I’m a seventh-generation North Carolinian and the political situation here disgusts me.
We are becoming just like Taxachusetts.
As I recall (I have not looked it up) there are close to twenty states who have a monopoly on liquor sales.
In the industry, these are called “control states.”
That adjective tells you what it’s REALLY all about.
I saw the the picture from the email. Itwas posted here a few times.
I bet MO’s not growing watermelons in the WH garden. It is probably a very PC garden.
It’s a Southron thing, going back to the dry days and blue laws. The town I live in was dry until a couple years ago. The town where I grew up is still dry.
When you look for racism, when you want to see racism, it is everywhere you look. The question is, does that say more about the observer than about the observed?
It’s not funny. But anyway, Perdue probably just wants to sell the job again.
