I think Ben Franklin's opinion on prayer in governance might bear repeating:

In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the Contest with G. Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the divine protection.-Our prayers, Sir, were heard, & they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending providence in our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance?

I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that "except the Lord build the House they labour in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better, than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human wisdom and leave it to chance, war and conquest.

I therefore beg leave to move-that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the Clergy of this City be requested to officiate in that Service

Well, we aren’t a Christian nation, according to Zero.

Besides, why waste an opportunity to diss Shirley Dobson?

Per the article, Robert Gibbs said that the President will pray privately, like he does every does.

Five times, no doubt.

Some national leader we got this time.

The uneasiness about him has given way to the inability to dismiss any longer the fact that this man hates this country and its Christian heritage and its “values”.

We have anti American President, and he proves it more, day by day.

A day to choose is coming. America or Zero. Which will America choose?

I pray it makes the right choice.

President Obama is distancing himself from the National Day of Prayer by nixing a formal early morning service and not attending a large Catholic prayer breakfast the following morning

Is that chap at Notre Dame still insisting on having Duh 0 speak at commencement and get an honorary degree???

Why does this not surprise me in the least? It also won’t shock those faithful Christian leaders who consider the National Day of Prayer so very important. I think most of them were kind of expecting this anyway...

It’s ok. Non-believers shouldn’t go to Christian events anyway. Now, who were the ones insisting that he’s a Christian?

Communists pray only to themselves.

Frankly, I’d rather see the Obamas skip the whole thing than defile the National Day of Prayer with the likes of Jeremiah Wright and a bunch of gay ministers or to make a farce out of the whole occasion. Just declare America godless until 2013. Then, hopefully, we can have a National Day of Repentance after the four years of Obama.

The farther President Obama distances himself from Christians the better. It will help the Christians who are on the fence to decide against him in the next election.

I hope Obama does pray every day, I just hope it’s not toward Mecca.

He’s not Catholic. I don’t think he should go anyway.

I’d rather my President be a faithful Christian. Absent that, I guess I’d rather have him be quiet than “act the part” in his particularly unconvincing way.

Obama is skipping the Catholic Prayer breakfest because he has an early lunch date with Joe over at Rays Hell Burgers Joint.
