The Need to Hold the GOP Accountable

By Robert Parry May 5, 2009

http://www.consortiumnews.com/2009/050509.html

Excerpts:

Perhaps it was the image of Jeb Bush expounding on the future of the Republican Party or Condoleezza Rice channeling her inner Richard Nixon with the imperial logic that “by definition, if it was authorized by the President, it did not violate our obligations under the Convention Against Torture.”

But what is increasingly clear is that the modern Republican Party – with its unwillingness to face up to its responsibility for many of today’s calamities and the crimes of its leaders – has become a clear and present danger to the founding principles of the United States, and to the nation’s security.

The issue is not “rebranding” – as the mainstream news media endlessly says – but accountability. The concern should be more about the Republican past than its future or, put differently, whether the GOP deserves a future considering what it has done in the recent past.

~~snip~~

The only accountability may come if most Americans turn their back on the reckless Republicans, perhaps opening space for the emergence of a new political party, one that may represent classic conservative positions without the overlay of right-wing economic extremism, religious fundamentalism and monarchical attitudes about presidential power.

Perhaps such a replacement for the Republican Party might come to respect and defend the Republic.

Romney and Jeb should read this:

I don't know about you, but I am impatient with those Republicans who after the last election rushed into print saying, “We must broaden the base of our party”—when what they meant was to fuzz up and blur even more the differences between ourselves and our opponents.

It was a feeling that there was not a sufficient difference now between the parties that kept a majority of the voters away from the polls. When have we ever advocated a closed-door policy? Who has ever been barred from participating?

Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?

Reagan 1975.

I once liked Mitt and never trusted Jeb - I am not exactly sure how to move forward.

We need to find a listing of where they are going to be holding their Town Hall Meetings and “tea party” them.

They don't want to go there -- and they better figure that out soon.

Jim, what is going on with you? You are becoming obsessed with Romney, which is your perogative, but c’mon man, Romney is not the only RINO lusting for the Whitehouse. Yes, he is a RINO, but he won’t make it through and primaries, so why worry about him so much?

Fight the bastards or perish!

They already have perished. Now the OP(Formerly the GOP) is trying the same disingenuous tactic the socialists in the RAT party have done over the years to hide their true intentions while trying to make themselves more palatable to Conservatives.

Yeah, that’s what they said about McCain too. He was out and left for dead. Sometimes you’ve got to drive a stake through their RINO hearts to make sure they can never rise again.

I think there needs to be a rebranding, because the left is always trying to change our brand in the minds of the public.
They brand us as the party of the rich.
We need to rebrand ourselves as the party that results in prosperity and freedom, which is for the little as much as it is for the rich.
They brand us the war party.
We need to rebrand ourselves as the “peace through strength” party.
They undermine national security, which leads to wars.
They promote the nanny state, sexual looseness, and feminism which destroys the family, and has destroyed the black family life.
A healthy economy, jobs, self reliance, responsibility, and dignity is the brand we want to reinstall.
etc. etc.
Rebranding doesn't mean we have to find a new brand, new compromised policies. It just means that the public needs to be reeducated about the benefits of the brand called conservatism.
It is not so much of a rebrand as a clarification and reselling of original brand.
And don't think that doesn't need to be done.
And a good way to do that is to listen to what people are concerned about and then tell them how conservatism addresses their concerns.
Let's not be knee jerk about the word “listening” or “rebranding.”
