Mary Beth Sallaz hadn't made any friends at UNC Charlotte yet, but then Ira Yarmolenko walked into their bio statistics class one day and sat down at the desk in front of her.

"She turned around and said, "Hi, what's your name?" She had a bubbly personality," Sallaz said. "She was my first friend at UNCC. She was the first person to speak to me."

Yarmolenko took Sallaz under her wing during the first semester of 2008, introducing her to new people and showing her around campus. And on May 2, 2008 - Yarmolenko's 20th birthday - Sallaz said she sent an e-mail, thanking Yarmolenko for her friendship, but never got a response.

I see you’re quoted in the article, and I’m sure Miss Yarmolenko’s family and other friends appreciate your generous praise.

The loss of anyone who touched us positively leaves a hole that simply can’t be filled.

Thanks for your kind words. I’d like to think I’ve been of some help to Ira’s family, however small.

I’m sure it’s important to them to know how much she meant to others. And a newspaper article is the kind of permanent record that they can save, and see years from now what a difference she made.

I had decided “murdoog” was a Scottish usage: “murdo og” is “young Murdo”!

UNCC was my oldest boy’s second choice for a school 2 years ago. The whole family thought the school was great.

This is the first I have heard about this crime. I’m so sorry for all of you that have been going through so much. You will all be in my prayers.

Latest news is DNA tests were negative for the older of the two suspects. His attorney is trying to get his bond reduced and/or charges dismissed.
