Cummings/AP Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be honored by the National Rifle Association with a specially designed assault rifle. "The Alaskan Hunter" will be presented to Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska next week (click for more info). Sarah Palin was bashed for her pricey wardrobe, but now she's getting a lethal accessory.
The National Rifle Association Foundation will present Sen. John McCain's ill-fated running mate with a military-style assault weapon next week.
The all-white "Alaskan Hunter" - fashionable until Labor Day - is the civilian version of a modified M-4 rifle carried by U.S. troops overseas.
Alaska's feisty Republican governor, who is weighing a potential 2012 presidential bid, will receive the rifle made by Templar Consulting at a May 14 NRA banquet.
It's engraved with Palin's name and adorned with a map of the state on the collapsible stock - made legal after the expiration of the assault weapons ban in 2004. The Big Dipper from the state flag is etched on the magazine well behind a vented barrel guard.
The rifle is chambered in .50-caliber "Beowulf." It's the same caliber used by heavy machine guns, which can take down big game, and in war zones "can disable both motor vehicles and assailants with body armor," according to ammo manufacturer Alexander Arms' Web site.
Templar gun designer Bob Reynolds told the NRA's magazine that Palin had stood up for Second Amendment gun rights and "I just wanted to do something to give back."

Yes, that is correct. Although at least at the beginning, I won't be "hunting down" but I will do my utmost to DESTROY an assailant or one invading our home. Exactly.

One of these candidates has a wonderful, sincere, reciprocal relationship with the NRA, one of them only has one son to offer to military service, only one them actually owns a gun (regardless of one of them lying about it until forced to confess) and one of them is a life time hunter (again, regardless of one of them lying about it until forced to confess) Only one of these candidates seems to have emerged from a metro sexual pod colony.

.223 on steroids? Why do you say that? I was under the impression that the 6.5 Grendel was the .223 replacement from Alexander Arms and the .50 Beowulf was done as an intellectual exercise to push the limits of the ar-16/15 platform.

Lightweight gun, Muzzle energy in .308 territory. Provided you aren’t looking for long range, it could be quite effective.

look at the picture of the rounds side by side ....the .50 beowolf case is tiny in comparison to a .30-06 or even a .308.
I am not a fan of the platform. I dont hate black guns, on the contrary....but they are not for me.
I would rather have the M-14 platform or the FN FAL platform with a round that can both stop something/someone and reach and and do it at range.....

Like a 20 ga shotgun. It was designed to blow locks and hinges off of doors. It is effective out to a hundred yards or so on personnel, and plays hell with engine compartments of vehicles. It is excellent as a 50 yard bear gun, giving you a hand full of shots utilizing the original AR magazine. The .50 single stacks in the original magazine as part of its design.

How much you wanna bet that those damned ankle biters already have another ethics complaint filled out and ready to file as soon as she accepts this fine firearm? Heck, she can’t even go and buy groceries or clothes without them filing a complaint. It’s ridiculous!

Lever guns were used by the military and the .45-70 round didn’t get the name “Government” for no reason. Hence the banners have every “right” to go after the lever action assault weapons. Then there’s the Brown Bess - talk about large caliber!

During 08 primaries when the choice was between juan mccain, huckster and myth, I grudgingly suppported myth as the least of the evils.
I'm even more disgusted with myth now and wish he and the juan liberals would go away.

It's certainly pushing a heavier bullet then either a 30-06 or .308 so I would imagine that the powder capacity is greater then either of those cartridges. It's OAL might be less but it's diameter is certainly greater. Your typical .308 NATO round has about 2200foot pounds of energy at 100 yards compared to a .50 Beowulf that has about 2100ftlbs. That isn't to say that the .50 competes ballistic with the.308 past say 150 yards. The 6.5 Grendel however is in the same league the .308 and even surpasses it in some aspects. Regardless the only commonality between the .223 and .50Beowulf is that they are fired from the same platform.
Personally I would prefer to have a AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel then a M-14 or a FNFAL in .308 and depending on what I was likely looking as using the rifle for I might even go with the much maligned .223 over the .308.
