BERLIN (Reuters) – The United States has made a formal request to Germany to take in some prisoners held at its military prison in Guantanamo Bay, a spokesman for Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Sunday.
Confirming a report to appear in Monday's Der Spiegel news magazine, the spokesman said the ministry is currently reviewing the request. He declined to provide further details.
Der Spiegel said the United States has asked Germany to take about 10 prisoners who cannot be sent to their home countries and who are classified as not posing a security threat.
Schaeuble, a leader in Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, has expressed reservations about Germany accepting detainees.
But Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a Social Democrat leader and chancellor candidate, has said Germany should take in some prisoners as a token of solidarity after Germany had long urged the United States to close the prison.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in Berlin last week that Washington has identified about 30 inmates in Guantanamo Bay who are ready to be released.

The stupidity and arrogance of this administration is beyond comparison. Germany should tell them what to do with their terrorists that they love so much.
Germany doesn’t have any overseas territories to confine these individuals in. I can’t imagine them accepting even these “safe” terrorists right into Germany.
Obama should beg the English, French or Russians instead- those nations have territories/islands in eastern Siberia and the Falklands which could be appropriate and secure enough.
If they are not criminals then send them back to their home countries.
It is obvious that the host countries would take them.
I would like to see this tread continued tomorrow with FR noting how many American news sources have carried this story; it has been around for more than a few days.

Reopen and send them to the penal colony on French Guyana.
In the case of France, I was thinking more of Clipperton Island or Devil’s Island.
How would any nation (well, except Poland - which I think tragically took all those 1970's Polish jokes to heart) countenance that?
