Romney, Cantor say market turmoil mostly to blame for 2008 loss
CNN - Political Ticker ^ | 2009-05-03

(CNN) – House Minority Whip Eric Cantor and former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said in an interview airing on CNN's State of the Union Sunday morning that the GOP wasn't directly responsible for much of the party's electoral misfortune in 2008.

"I frankly believe that much of what happened in the last election revolved around the fact that the economy fell apart at the time we were, if you will, holding the hot potato. Republicans and Democrats have been playing this game, passing the hot the potato, spending money like there was no tomorrow," Romney told John King.

"And the economy came crashing down while our party was holding the hot potato. And people said, hey, it's time for something else but I think if they took a good, hard look at what the — something else is planning on doing with regards to the massive borrowing, they are going to say, that is probably not the right thing for America's future."

The party of “nothing is our fault” wants to be put in powwer so it can continue to deny culpability for its own failures. Thanks guys, but no thanks. Bye bye.

In my post I said Bush bore 15 percent of the blame. However, in my analysis Bush gets points for proposing reform multiple times. With all that was going on, when the Democrats said it was racist for him to reform the GSEs, it would have taken political capital he didn’t have to get it through.

It is therefore both parties fault, so lets not let Dodd, Franks, Clinton, Cuomo. and Obama himself go unnamed in the discussion.

Yeah, but there are a bazillions threads and posts to that effect. We DON'T see the posts putting blame on Bush as well.

BTW, it's got to be more than 10 to 15 percent. There were plenty of Senators and Reps on the GOP side that voted for and espoused the expansion of the program during Bush's admin. I would say it's about 35 percent the GOP and the rest dems. Also, you have to weight Bush's score because of his position as president and the bully pulpit. Also, add to the fact that Bush waited till the whole thing was collapsing around him before he ever really called for reform.

FM-FR reform was in his budget proposals every year. He did not control the Senate for much of his first term. A lot of his bully pulpit time had to be spent replying to those who wanted to lose the war on terror - which he could have done better.

What do the Democrats have to do with the fact that the GOP won't hold itself accountable?

Are there any of my reference you’d like to dispute?

Or are more comfortable throwing out labels and running from the room?

While not without controversy, the net effect of Gramm-Leach-Bliley has likely been to alleviate rather than further the current financial crisis.

IMO G-L-B created banks that were too big to just let fail.

Meanwhile you manage to avoid mentioning Franks-Dodd-Raines OBAMA-ACORN Fannie Mae nexus which if you were intellectually honest, you would have included to support your “both parties” meme.

I have ripped into that entire bunch time after time on FR. You are playing a strawman game here to avoid placing blame where blame is due - the GOP played a large supporting role in the meltdown, and until the GOP comes to grips with the problems that led to Phil Gramm, we won't get traction with the voters.

It WAS the left who blackmailed the banks making bad loans in the name of “affordable housing”. Bush did NOT “go along”, he in fact protested twice, only to have Franks and Dodd suggest it was racist not to cooperate.

Bush went along with plans to increase home ownership at the expense of creditworthiness. That is documented.

It WAS Paulson from Goldman Sachs that gave Bush such bad advice. Wall Street regulation, or lack thereof is a red herring.

Last I checked, it was Bush who chose Paulsen to be Treasury Secretary. Or does Bush not bear any blame for making a bad choice?

The September 15th run on U.S. Treasuries WAS in fact an orchestrated effort, when $550 Billion were called in less than 2 hours. That was the catylist for the banking problems.

The financial meltdown took years to evolve. And there was a lot of blame to go around all around.

I don’t recall you ever ripping into them... and it isn’t my responsibility to remember any of your posts. Since the meltdown occurred, the mainstream press has kept the public in the dark about the CRA Fannie Mae Freddie Mac origins so that 3-5 years from now they can make Republicans out to be like Herbert Hoover. And your Phil Gramm meme is a senseless lefty one. Get over it.

I really don't give a crap. My posting history speaks for itself, and the topic of the thread is what cost the GOP power in 2008, not your particular sensibilities.

I have ripped into the whole Fannie/Freddie mess quite often as well.

And your Phil Gramm meme is a senseless lefty one. Get over it.

Senseless lefty meme? Since when is the truth senseless?

Ah, I see - you are one of those pubbies can do no wrong types that apologizes for GOP transagressions. In other words, you're one of those unprincipled pinheads who helped cost the GOP a majority. And the type who needs to get the hell out of the way and let those with some principles restore the party.

You mean the same Heritage Fondation report that cites Bill Clinton as an authority on whether GLB was a good thing - you know, the guy who signed it and who has good reason to downplay its impact? And the same Heritage Foundation report that has the chutzpah to cite Rubin as an authority on regulation of credit default swaps? You know, the same Rubin who crafted Citibank into an entity that has required tens of billions of taxpayer dollars in bailouts? BWAHAHAHHA!!!

You really ought to read stuff, and maybe even understand it, before citing it...
