‘Google killer’ Wolfram Alpha gets public demo (important internet breakthrough)
Telegraph UK ^ | 5/1/2009 | Claudine Beaumont

The website, Wolfram Alpha, launches later this month, and aims to provide a different approach to internet search queries by not only understanding people’s questions but answering them directly. It means web users can ask questions online in much the same way as they ask them in real life, a process known as “natural search”.

Some internet experts have dubbed Wolfram Alpha as “as important as Google”. The search engine is the brainchild of Stephen Wolfram, an eminent British physicist.

“Our goal is to make expert knowledge accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime,” said Dr Wolfram, as he demonstrated the search engine at Harvard University. “Like interacting with an expert, it will understand what you’re talking about, do the computation, and then present you with the results.”

Please ignore that initial message...not sure where that came from.

There is a youtube video of this search engine at source and an hour plus lecture on the process at youtube.com.

This is the same fellow who wrote
Mathematica

a computational software program
used in scientific, engineering, and mathematical fields
and other areas of technical computing.

He is a heavy hitter
I would listen to him
if I were you...

The comment “This piece is from a blog but the actually story is from I”...not sure where that came from?

I guess it has been explained away sufficiently.

Thx much!

It’s originally from the Independent UK:

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/an-invention-that-could-change-the-internet-for-ever-1678109.html

> The engine, which will be free to use, works by drawing on the knowledge on the internet, as well as private databases. Dr Wolfram said he expected that about 1,000 people would be needed to keep its databases updated with the latest discoveries and information.

Will try it out when available to the public. Google’s bias and arrogance needs to be put in it’s place.

Can you ask a question, get an answer, and if the answer is wrong somehow correct it? Will there be a live person to contact to point out errors?

I think the program displays the algorithm(s) it used in answering the question so you can check it yourself.
