Glenn Beck Slanders Fr. Charles E. Coughlin
Glenn Beck Program (radio) ^ | April 30, 2009 | Glenn Beck

Posted on 05/02/2009 8:00:15 PM PDT by Arthur McGowan

Click the link for audio segment on Youtube.

On his program of April 30, shortly after 9:35 AM EST, Glenn Beck slandered the heroic Catholic victim of 1930s Communism and the FDR smear machine, Fr. Charles E. Coughlin, as an "anti-semite," "Jew-baiter," "race-baiter," "a kook," etc., and as "okay with the extermination of Jews," and as believing "the ovens aren't that bad." Beck then went on to make other less-shocking, though equally baseless, characterizations of Coughlin's concept of "social justice."

How do you slander a dead person?

Here ya go, Spanky...

Coughlin, a right-wing populist, advocated a form of corporatism influenced by Italian Fascism. In 1934 Coughlin organized the National Union for Social Justice through which he argued that neither capitalism nor democracy had a future in America.

According to wikipedia, Roosevelt revoked Coughlin’s mailing privileges after forcing him off the air.

Regardless of the fact that this poisonous little toad was a Nazi sympathizer, this was an inappropriate use of federal power and violation of the 1st Amendment.

BTW, he supported Hitler and the Nazis after Pearl Harbor and the German declaration of war on America. His popularity dropped right quick after that.

The Inquirer article is a slander of Beck, IMO.

And since historians are usually eager to compare envangelical conservatives to demagogues like Father Coughlin, they seldom care to remind us that Father Coughlin was a progressive Democrat.

Some of his catchier delcarations included: "The New Deal is Christ's Deal." and "God is directing President Roosevelt." The name of his self-published newsletters was Social Justice, a term that hasn't lost its cachet with the religious left.

Many think the Rev. Coughlin got the same treatment given to McCarthy.

There's a big difference. History (through the release of Soviet documents) has proven McCarthy to be correct.

So unless I look into this man and figure everything out for myself (the truth, that is) I can either believe you or Glen Beck. I’m inclined to believe Beck at this point as I do not have much faith in Catholic fathers anymore. It seems they can’t be trusted anymore than any other regular Joe Blow on the street.

If anything, Coughlin was trashed worse than McCarthy. And it will take longer to rehabilitate Coughlin. Note how a parade of Freepers (who, I am sure, believe they are immune to Communist propaganda) have come on this thread, repeating without question the smears cooked up by Stalinist Communist activists seventy years ago.

Okay. Go with your prejudice against Catholic priests, then.

This has to be viewed in the context of Irish-American response to Communism and the perception shared by McCarthy that Hollywood Jews were propagandizing communistic ideas.

Beck is main stream media, one of us???

Just guessing, but US population in those days must have been around 250 million, and Coughlin had an audience of 40 million, thats a lot of kooks.

Exactly the same way you slander a living person. And it is equally immoral because, although you don't cause distress to a dead person, the slander is an equal offense against the truth, whether the target is living, dead, or off on a desert island somewhere.

In the case of a public figure like Fr. Coughlin, who labored to promote the Common Good, slandering him is an offense against the Common Good, because repeating the slanders promotes the agenda of liars--such as the Communists, anti-Catholics, Progressives, Obama-ites, abortionists, etc., who all benefit when any Catholic priest, even a dead one, is smeared.

So, slandering Charles Coughlin is an offense against his right to his good name, and a blow struck in solidarity with Stalin, FDR, Hillary, Obama, and all the other forces for evil at work even at this present moment.

Again Coughlin eventually opposed the New Deal because he thought it wasn’t Socialist enough.

Did you check out Arthur McGowan's profile page? I don't think he's the one who's joking. Everything I find on a net search supports Glenn Beck's accusations. I don't find anything to the contrary and nothing that supports Arthur McGowan's assertion that is it all communist propaganda.

Arthur McGowan, are you going to provide proof of your belief?
