Michelle Obama has taken casual to a haute new level.
While volunteering Wednesday at a D.C. food bank, the First Lady sported her usual J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a sneaky splurge: trainers that go for $540.
That's right: These sneakers - suede, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps - are made by French design house Lanvin, one of fashion's hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, and have been a brisk seller all spring.
They're out of stock at posh Meatpacking District boutique Jeffrey, and Barneys New York boasts a limited selection of the sneaks, which are a cult favorite among fashionistas.

Other celebrity fans of Lanvin's costly kicks include Ellen DeGeneres and Kanye West, who has blogged about his faves.
As the family's primary dog walker, Michelle clearly requires comfortable footwear.
"I got up at 5:15 in the morning to walk my puppy," she joked Thursday. "That's how my day starts. Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I'm still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out."
She'll be trodding on New York's sidewalks Tuesday for the first time as First Lady. Michelle will meet with staff at the U.S. mission to the United Nations. Later, she headlines Time magazine's "100 most influential people" gala.

First show in the new series, “Pimp My Sneaks.”
I think she still prefers her open-hoof sandals for gardening.
I’m sorry, I’m still trying to grasp “posh Meatpacking District boutique”...strange images come to mind-and none involve shoes.(I’m just an un-hip hick chick, I reckon.)
One cannot do anything practical in those shoes!
But, consider the wearer.
Why do they make it sooo easy to fall for the class envy thang? I mean, in normal circumstances, I don’t begrudge a body for what they fritter their dough on- maybe it’s because they seem to just rub our noses in it?
Way to unite, Mo!
I've been upset with Obama for months because he doesn't spend our money as carefully as they would spend their own money. I was wrong. They spend our tax dollars exactly as carelessly as they spend their own money. They are disgusting beyond words.
Even if I could afford $540 sneakers for the entire family, I'd rather get ordinary shoes and give the difference to my church, to my favorite charity to help sick children, or to anything useful. I don't do conspicuous consumption, while the Obamas don't do anything else.
I couldn’t care less about what she pays for her shoes. I buy $250 a pair sneakers because they help me walk (and mine are ugly too.) Who cares what someone pays for shoes...it’s their money and they can spend it as they wish. Some guys buy expensive suits due to their line of work, some women buy expensive purses, etc. I don’t want to be like the “class envy” types on the left, and fret over what somebody pays for something.
Guilty.
I think she looks like a very large man in drag. She's an Amazon woman. When she stands next to her sugar daddy, he looks like one of her kids.
This country is soooo messed up.
Evita Peron Obama
ewe gross..does it ever shaves its legs...
Not really. It's a "business expense." She needs them to feed the poor for a few minutes.
Man, them things is too big to fit LeBron James. They looks like about 19 EEEEE. Put a handle on them for a nice briefcase.
Ugly shoes and what the heck size are they????...they look huge!
Ugly sneakers,feet,ankles,outfit,face etc.
First of all, they're *sneakers*...not shoes. There's a difference.Second...on a more philosophical note...my Dad,who passed on a few years ago, worked damn hard during his life and was very careful with his $$$.As a result he achieved what many would consider a very comfortable life.Yet in spite of that he used to wear Timex watches and drove Oldsmobiles...although he could have easily afforded watches and cars that were *much* more expensive. My Dad was a child of the depression.Mrs Osama is clearly a child of the *me* generation.
Just my 2 cents' worth.
She should also encourage those at the food bank to sample the cake.
I agree on both counts. How clueless do you need to be to show up to work at a food bank in the latest over-priced sneakers? Audacity is not always a good thing. In fact, it’s highly over-rated.
Hey, Sarah Palin, how much yo’ shoes cost? Let’s see ‘em.
They are nice to wear while eating Kobe beef.
