Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is expected to play a role in the National Council for a New America, a new effort led by House and Senate Republican leaders designed to find ways to make the party more appealing to independent voters.
"I understand that Governor Palin is hopefully going to be involved as well," said Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) during a conference call this morning announcing the group's formation.
Meg Stapleton, a spokeswoman for the Alaska governor, did not immediately return an email seeking to confirm Palin's involvement. If she does respond, we'll update the post.

Maybe she keeps her friends close, but her enemies closer?
My hope is Sarah, along with a core of other conservatives, will pull this group rightward and keep it there. I understand her wanting to be part of it. It’s all there is right now.
I’ll withhold judgement until Palin herself actually confirms that she is going to take part. I’d prefer to see her keep the beltway bandits at least an arms length away. She has much more appeal to the grassroots where the voters actually are. Her appearance on American Chopper tonight, should be followed by her attending Sturgis later this summer. I’m sure she would be very warmly welcomed there. The GOP needs her more at this point than she needs them. Besides, how new can this be with the old McCain, Romney, etc. Jindal seems to think that he’s a much better fit in the beltway bunch, since he doesn’t really seem to have a lot of appeal on the grassroots level.
Exactly. Sarah should start a truly NEW council - DeMint, Pence, Sanford, get Jindal to "switch" councils, etc.
Yep. She should run the other way.
Really? I thought true losers betray their principles and vote RINO.
We need to get the younger, more zealous conservatives up and in the higher ranks. Throw the old farts out and
We need zest. The Democrats do that, they take in anyone who is willing to work hard and long and play dirty.
We need to open ranks and start dragging fellow party members into the fight.
I once attended a gathering for Bouchard and there was next to no one interested and it was treated like a country club gathering.
Meanwhile the Democrats whip themselves in a religious frenzy and hit the phones and find whatever smut they can on opponents. We need to stop cringing at the thought of doing low stuff.
The latest polling shows that only 22% self-identify now as Republicans, while 39% (and rising) identify themselves as Independent...many of them folks who formerly called themselves Republicans.
So, perhaps you're on the brink of being a "loser third-party" and just haven't realized it yet.
The irony is that it is folks who talk exactly like you do who are helping to drive conservatives out of the Republican Party in droves.
We could start recruiting people from all walks of life. By that we need to start putting our ear to the ground and develop as wide a networking system as possible. We have to get down and dirty and start offering to help small business people whatever we can to get them solidly on our side.
I think I’m going to write a manifesto.
We need to start treating the political party like a business. If you don’t help streamline and innovate and work like a dervish, you’re out.
Your chances of doing that now in the Republican Party are about as good as doing so in the Democrat Party.
Wow promoting another turd party... How many votes did your party get in the last election???
That’s why we’re going to continue to lose.
How typically Republican to be living in the past.
Only if you keep playing in their rigged game.
Second!
I also know that at some point she will have to reach out to the GOP apparatus. I'm just not sure what the timing should be. Guess I'll have to trust her judgment.
She MUST maintain her outsider image. I'm very confident she understands that, at least.
