CONGRESS WANTS TO TAX YOUR BAGS
boblonsberry.com ^ | 04/30/09 | Bob Lonsberry

I love my country.

But I hate my government.

Mostly because it hated me first.

Here’s another proof.

Jim Moron (sic) is a congressman from Virginia. He’s a Democrat. He’s been in Washington since he got out of college. He’s never held a job in the private sector.

And he’s figured out a way to screw you.

Deep and hard.

Congressman Moron is the author of something called House Resolution 2091 – the Plastic Bag Reduction Act of 2009. It is also known as Dopey’s Law.

At least it is to me.

What Congresschump Moron wants to do is put a five-cent tax on every “single-use carryout bag” used in the United States. What is a single-use carryout bag? It’s what they put your stuff in when you buy something at a store.

A five-cent tax on every single one of them.

I’m sorry. That’s not right.

It’s twenty-five cents. A quarter a bag. Each bag, each transaction.

Starting next New Year’s Day, you would pay a federal tax of a nickel a bag on everything you bought. Five years later, on January 1, 2015, the tax would go up 500 percent, to twenty-five cents a bag.

What kind of bags are we talking?

The bags your groceries come in. The bag your hamburgers come in. The bag your everything comes in. A nickel, and then a quarter, for each one. They could probably pay the federal deficit with the money they make off Wal-Mart bags alone.

So if you went to McDonald’s to buy a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, the rancher who raised the beef would be taxed for selling it to the processor, the processor would be taxed for selling it to McDonald’s, you would be taxed for buying it from McDonald’s, McDonald’s would be taxed for selling it to you, and you would be taxed on the bag you carried it out the door in.

Unless it was 2013 or after. By then, Congresstyrant Moron’s legislation requires the government to consider putting an additional tax on “food wrappers and containers.”

In that case, you would also be taxed on the box your burger is in. Heaven help you if you got fries and an apple pie.

In that situation, in 2015, you could pay a quarter tax on the bag, a quarter tax on the burger box, a quarter tax on the fries bag and a quarter tax on the pie container. That’s a dollar in packaging tax.

See what I mean about hating the government?

Did I mention that Congresspuke Moron is a Democrat? A 20-year-in-Congress, supporter-of-Barack-Obama, member-of-the-leadership Democrat?

Did I mention that every store in America would have to inventory, track and account for all its bags to the IRS?

Of course, in the above list of taxes paid on your Quarter Pounder with Cheese (I mention the specific burger in hope that McDonald’s will pay me a product-placement fee. Gift certificates would be fine) there are a bunch of taxes omitted. In addition to everything listed above, the rancher also had to pay property tax and fuel tax, as well as FICA tax on his hired hands and sales tax on feed and veterinary care. The guy who drove the cattle to the processors had to pay fuel tax and business tax and his own FICA tax as well as licensing fees. The processor had all those things plus the fee required to pay for federal inspectors.

McDonald’s has fuel tax, property tax, payroll tax, business tax, license fees and franchise tax.

But wait, there’s more. Congressdung Moron isn’t done with you yet.

In his legislation, there is a fund created which will be doled out to states which impose their own taxes on “single-use carryout” bags. You heard me right.

He’s going to skim off some of the money he steals from you every time you go to the store and give that to the states IF they impose their own additional “single-use carryout bag” tax.

So you go to the grocery store to get your food for the week and for every single bag it’s a nickel for the feds and a nickel for the state and the shaft for you.

Until 2015 when it’s a quarter for the feds and a quarter for the state and the shaft for you.

Some things never change.

But wait, there’s more.

Are you familiar with double bagging? Not as a face covering for ugly prom dates, but as a means of keeping flimsy plastic bags from ripping when they carry things with corners.

Well, in Congresscaca Moron’s world, double bagging means double taxing.

What would that mean to your grocery bill and your family budget? How would that impact your trip to Wal-Mart or Taco Bell or Home Depot? As you go from store to store in the mall, picking up bag after bag, you will leave behind quarter after quarter.

And the federal government will get a windfall.

America gave Washington to the Democrats, and the Democrats are going to give America the shaft.

Some things never change.

Not a day goes by that I don't have the thought about why the American people can not realize what is happening to both them and their country. I know we've allowed the country to be "dumbed down." But dumbed down this much?

Does this mean a quarter for the box the tea bags come in and a separate quarter for each tea bag in the box?

So stuff five or six HDPE bags in your pocket before you go to the store. They compress down really small and surely everyone has a few around the house all the time.

but it's for the environment,,,,,, that's why this stuff happens. I am against litter, I pick up trash in my yard from a very busy street everyday, paper wrappers, cans, beer bottles and cigarette butts by the dozens. I am for anti litter campaigns like DONT MESS WITH TEXAS but this tax is a crime.

I have a friend who has traveled extensively in Asia and the far east and she says there are places where white plastic bags are hanging from every branch of every tree and bush. That is pathetic. Maybe stronger fines for littering would help.

This barely scratches the surface of how big a Moron the guy is. This is a guy who had a knock-down, drag-out, beat-the-hell-out-of-her fight with his wife on the front lawn of their house; he claimed that a 9-year-old kid tried to hijack his car outside of a recreation center, and so he manhandled the kid — and STILL got re-elected. So not only is he a first class moron, my friends and neighbors in northern VA are first-class morons, too. Now his brother wants to be a U.S. Senator.

My bags aren’t single use. I take them home and use them to pick up dog poop in the yard. Maybe I could come up with a third use for them.

I am waiting for the day when working (income tax paying) Americans, every single one stays home for a day without pay to send a message:

How do you like the instant and permanent 0.4% reduction in tax revenues this year?

Start the printing presses again, morons...

It’s not a question of being ‘dumbed down’ (although much of the country is pretty dumb). The problem is, ‘what to do about it?’. For years, we could rely on at least some of our elected officials to represent us. Now, we don’t have that, there are no legitimate Republicans anymore. So we’ll probably need a flash point where some of the people take things into their own hands. Won’t be pretty, but it’s all that’s left when the corruption goes this deep.

The only stores I have seen use plastic bags are grocery stores.
It is still idiotic. The whole group now is idiotic.
I feel like I am living in the stupid movie Idiocracy.

The bag issue must have been in a seminar or memo for the Dems. There is a state rep in Wisconsin that wants to ban plastic bags.
And since he has been making such a stink about it, I have been asking for plastic every time I get a bag; aside from the fact that the last two times I had paper bags, they ripped before I got them into the house.
My first thought when I heard about the plastic bag ban was that this guy had never bought more groceries than he can get at the convenience store and he must only do his shopping on days without pouring rain.

HDPE: High Density Polyethelyne (bags)

They are making plastic bags now that decompose, so if we just used them this issue would go away.

I bought and use canvas bags at the stores - they hold more and won’t break. I also bought a really cool collapsable crate that I use at Costco. There is nothing wrong with being green if you are sensible about it.

As stated in a previous reply - they are making bags that decompose, thus elimiating the problem in the end. Typical politian writting a law to get attention.
