"MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The 39-year-old woman who was the first to die in Mexico's swine flu epidemic spent the last eight days of her life going from clinic to clinic to find out what was wrong with her but doctors were baffled.
The woman, from the southern state of Oaxaca, died shortly after being admitted to hospital as an emergency case. Experts only identified the virus that killed her 10 days later.
The swine flu outbreak has killed as many as 159 people in Mexico, and forced the World Health Organization on Wednesday to warn that a global flu pandemic is imminent.
The woman, who worked as a census taker in the city of Oaxaca, became ill with what was she thought was a severe case of pneumonia on April 4 but was not admitted to hospital until April 12. . . ."

swine flu ping
“The 39-year-old woman who was the first to die in Mexico’s swine flu epidemic”
Statements like this really get to me. We honestly don’t know if she was the “first to die”. How many had pneumonia as a complication, but were undiagnosed? How many older people died at home of “pneumonia”, or a “heart attack” that could’ve been a complication of this flu, but were undiagnosed as suffering from this NEW virus.
[I’m remembering that many AIDS patients weren’t diagnosed with AIDS because they didn’t realize it existed and later when they looked at records they realized that some of their patients who had died of pneumonia most likely HAD AIDS, and no-one knew it.]
There was some chatter on an internet illness tracking site that stated “something” was going on in Mexico regarding a flu as early as March 30th.
At this point there are so many conflicting numbers, and sensational news articles about this it’s really hard to know who is telling the truth, or which numbers are correct. Plus, our journalists are REALLY not competent enough to handle reporting on something like this with any real understanding.
For gosh sakes, they are still calling this the “Swine Flu”, and it’s NOT “SWINE FLU” — we already have that, and have had that for years it’s well known among pig farmers, and vets and such, and it’s not transmissible human-to-human.
This “NEW VIRUS” is a (MAN-MADE) combination of several strains of swine flu (N. American, European, Asian), N. American AVIAN(Bird) Flu (only known to infect BIRDS until now), and Human Influenza “A” subtype H1N1 (same subtype as the Spanish Flu — although I’m not saying this is the SAME as the Spanish Flu at all, just that the human “portion” of these genetic markers are the same).
I do feel very sorry for this poor woman though. I can’t imagine her frustration, knowing something was VERY wrong and not getting anyone to either believe her, or do ANYTHING about it... SO SAD...
Prayers for this woman’s family and friends, and for all who are suffering, and especially those who have died from this “Chimera Flu”/”Mexiflu”. Prayers also for all the doctors and medical professionals, virologists, researchers, etc... who are working around the clock to figure it out. Prayers also for those in our media, that they will educate themselves enough to report on this more responsibly. Prayers also for those in the national and international health organizations (WHO & CDC), that they will do the right thing, and NOT keep anyone in the dark about how serious this really is — and Prayers that there are enough people in our government that are not “taken” with Obama and will not go along with any plans to “take advantage” of this crisis...
[BTW: Japan’s media and their government are taking VERY serious precautions already, and are really upset at the way Obama is handling the security and health of our citizens... ]
A suggestion to all here at FR — I would start browsing through articles in other countries about this. It seems we are NOT getting the same information as others around the world.
I’ll be showing this to family members currently doing census work here. Thanks.
Spain suspects nearly 90 cases of swine flu
Apr 30, 2009, 11:31 GMT
Madrid - “The number of suspected swine flu cases in Spain has risen to 87, the Health Ministry said Thursday.Ten cases of the disease have been diagnosed so far. All of the diagnosed patients had been to Mexico recently except for a man whose girlfriend visited the Latin American country. The patients were responding to treatment and doing well, according to the ministry. Several of them were allowed to go home from hospital.”
Hmmm. Perhaps this is a way to eliminate ACORN once and for all.

Ping (Thanks, DvdMom!)
you have links for japan media?
I sure do! :)
[American in Tokyo, Munz was inquiring about what the Japanese media was reporting, thought I’d ping you to my reply to him...]
AIT was putting up a bunch of information on a thread early this morning. And, instead of pulling all the post links, I hope you don’t mind if I just link you to the main thread. If you look for his posts you’ll see some of the most recent stuff he’s forwarded.

AIT, may be able to tell you where English speaking people can get news directly from the Japanese media without needing translation. I haven’t looked into that myself although I know there are some English Language papers in Japan and from Japan online — I used to run across them for a blog thing I used to do, unfortunately I can’t remember the names of the papers anymore! :)
Hope this helps.
ALL:
I definitely suggest to all FReepers to browse through the foreign media in how they are handling this pandemic (which it IS, even though it’s not considered a “DEADLY” pandemic and hopefully won’t become one).
You can get Yomiuri Daily news, Mainichi News, Japan Times in English. Of course, their news in English may be anywhere from 12 hours to 24 hours FOLLOWING what was written in Japanese, and may not be in detail. Without being able to read Japanese it will be a challenge to get into the information cycle, but I can at least recommend the three above.
