Swine Flu Alert - Long Beach, CA
CSULB Daily 49er ^

Posted on 04/29/2009 5:03:45 PM PDT by Retired Greyhound

A Cal State Long Beach student received a “probable positive” test result for swine flu.

The Long Beach Health Department informed the university of the affected student late Tuesday, and early Wednesday morning CSULB Beach President F. King Alexander sent a campus-wide e-mail with information about the student, symptoms of swine flu and a hotline for anyone to call if they have any questions specific to swine flu.

The student who may have been infected lived in the Los Alamitos residence hall. The roommate of the possibly infected student has been moved to a different room where he or she will remain until further notice.

Residents of Los Alamitos said they are not overly concerned about catching the virus.

“I’m not too worried about it. The health center is right up the street so if I ever start to feel flu like symptoms I will definitely go there first,” said junior liberal studies major Stacey Burkhardt. “I feel safe because the cleaning staff does a really good job around the dorms, I’ve been washing my hands a lot more and if I feel sick I know that have to take care it right away.”

Burkhardt’s roommate had the same feeling and did not feel threatened by the virus.

“I’m not too worried either because most the cases in the US have been pretty mild and only one person has died,” said junior kinesiology major Suzanne Wen.

According to the LBHD website, “We are updating physicians and other medical providers and encouraging them to test any patients that may be experiencing any influenza-like illness, including but not limited to fever, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.”

A receptionist in the administrative office of the Student Health Services center said Wednesday morning that Director Michael Carbuto was in Alexander’s office. She said that Carbuto had advised the staff to refer any questions regarding swine flu to the public affairs administration.

Students, faculty and staff alike are concerned for their health. One student said one of her classes was cancelled as a result of the possibly infected student.

“I received an e-mail from my teacher and the student enrollment services this morning saying that my history class was cancelled. The student had symptoms and is waiting for test results,” said Katelyn Nelson, a freshman undeclared.

Some students are fearful of contracting the flu virus on campus.

“I got scared when I read the e-mail from President Alexander saying that a person in the dorms might have it,” said Jose Torres, a senior hospitality food service and hotel management major. “You never know who might have it around you, you need to be cautious. I wash my hands often and I am trying not to shake hands with people.”

If you are concerned about swine flu, call the CSULB hotline at (562) 985-1460.

Where did you get that? Did you develop it? That is a great list. I would like to see one maintained for school closings and other social distancing measures.

I have found news stories where folks are being tested in Oklahoma and Louisiana. For example,

So, not quite probable yet but I bet cases are confirmed tomorrow.

I agree. Thanks Pete. I can see now why the schools have been closed in my area. It makes sense. The irony is that spring break’s purpose is to stop the flu cycle and the unintended consequence is that it created the vehicle for a pandemic.

Here’s more.

From Kane County, IL:

Two Kane County schools to close with probable swine flu cases
The Kane County Health Department today recommended that the Rotolo Middle School in Batavia and the Marmion Academy in Aurora close temporarily following the identification of a probable swine flu case in each of the schools. This is a preventive measure designed to help break the cycle of disease transmission and protect students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the larger community.
The Health Department further recommends that extracurricular activities be cancelled and that staff, faculty, students do not gather together outside of school since that would defeat the goal of disrupting disease transmission. The Kane County Health Department is working closely with school officials to protect all the students, staff and faculty.
