TV station: Woman claims her father was Zodiac Killer

SAN FRANCISCO — A woman stepped forward today to claim her late father was the infamous Zodiac Killer and that she as a 7-year-old wrote some of the letters that taunted local police, a local television station reported.

Kevin McLean, the former law partner of the late Melvin Belli, said he has led a two-year investigation into claims by Deborah Perez that her father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, was the Zodiac killer, according to KTVU. Hendrickson, who lived in Orange County, died in 1993 of cancer.

"He was a Jekyll and Hyde," McLean said of Hendrickson. "He was nuts. He set out to kill people. Some of these killings were not random." As a youngster, Perez said she sometimes accompanied her father on his killing sprees to the Bay Area. The family lived in Santa Ana, but McLean said Hendrickson may have worked at one time at the Mare Island Naval shipyard in Vallejo.

"There were strange events with my father," she said. "I would hear shots and my father would say it was firecrackers. I would see a woman running and then hear shots and he would tell me someone threw firecrackers at her." Perez said that she wrote and stamped the letters to the San Francisco Chronicle following the murder of San Francisco cab driver Paul Stine in October 1969. Those letters have been in the possession of the San Francisco police since 1969.

She also claimed to be with her father when he allegedly killed Darlene Ferrin, 22, at the Blue Springs Golf Club in July 1969 and wounded her companion, Michael Mageau, 19.

"He had a vicious argument with Dee that night," she said. "My father grabbed his gun. He goes up to the passenger side. I heard shots. I heard screams and moans.

Seems to me her story shouldn’t be too hard to prove or disprove, if the police think it’s worth taking seriously. Fingerprints from the envelope (and maybe DNA, but that’s iffy after all this time and for trace samples). Handwriting: track down any school she attended around the same time and for a few years after, and interview teachers and administrators who might be able to put their hands on a writing sample. Lots of teachers save stuff. If there’s a childhood handwriting match, I’d believe her.

OK she was only 7 and not the killer but around the killer but still.

If she knew at the time and withheld the information all along, then she is an accomplice. Claiming to have co-written notes and been at the scene of the crimes puts her above being just a "relation".

Too weird, the story at the excerpt has changed since I posted it. I’m used to that happening with the AP, but not a local story.

They should be able to prove or disprove this by the DNA on the stamps.

If anyone hasn’t seen the recent film Zodiac please do. It’s one of the best American movies in years!

DNA from the envelopes, which failed to match to a suspect and his accuser, might bear this out

Just what I was thinking.

"Perez spoke at today's press conference. Here are just a few of her wild claims.

During the shooting deaths, he told her the gun shots were firecrackers. She stamped the envelopes containing the cryptic letters sent out to local media.

She embroidered the mask he wore while committing his notorious acts.

During a routine police stop, he stuck his gun in the back of her pants. This happened just after the 4th of July killings.

She also said he killed between 30 and 40 people.

He lived in Orange County. Of course.

He apologized on his deathbed.

The murders seemed to be a "special activity" between her and her dad.

Allegedly.

But here's the rub, Perez says she wrote some of the letters herself and that she saw a composite on America's Most Wanted in 2007 of her father as the Zodiac Killer, and began to remember it all. So, you know, she may be delusional in addition to being sanity-estranged. (However, according to attorney Kevin McLean, the man who lead this most recent investigation, "Everyone is going to say she is crazy, but we had psychologists examine Ms. Perez." Word is, though, that McLean isn't a beacon of mental clarity himself.)

For many years, people fingered Arthur Leigh Allen, a child molester from Vallejo who died in 1992, as the Zodiac Killer."

Freaky. High weirdness for Walpurgisnacht

As I recall, it was the fact that the handwritng did not match the most seriously considered subject, which prevented the police from charging him.

let's see what handwriting analysis says about the samples this woman should be expected to produce.

http://zodiackillertruth.com/hendrickson.htm

[snip] Perez claims that her stepfather, Guy Ward Hendrickson, took her along on at least two of his attacks in the late 1960s... Perez also claims to have a pair of horn-rimmed glasses taken from Stine... Chris Sorensen, the former mayor of Norco, California, calims that Perez told him that she was an illegitimate daughter of President John F. Kennedy, going as far as to describe her memories of the Kennedy compound. Amazingly, Perez, according to Sorensen, also claimed to have been with Bobby Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel —where the New York Senator and Presidential candidate was assassinated. [pnis]
