"A 23-month-old child from Texas has become the first American to die from the swine flu outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta confirmed today. The CDC released no other information about how or where the child may have contracted the disease." ABC report, First U.S. Death From Swine Flu in Texas the CDC Confirms, April 29, 2009 [emphasis added]
My antennae started to go up as I heard various reports about the first reported swine flu death in the USA. A 23-month old child from Texas was all that we were told. Googling, I found the ABC article above pointedly mentioning that the CDC released no other information about how or where the child may have contracted the disease.

that is what bothers me about this. paranoid? maybe. But that doesn't mean the terrorists aren't out to get us.
So its breaking news. Its just now confimed that it swine flu here: its one case.
And its a big so what
Sorry: I will maintain a healthy denial for a bit longer.
No one is treating this with any real seriousness. Its all panic talk but no action.
If you were serious, flights from Mexico would have been immediate suspect as the japanese did and the border crossings would have been monitored.
Instead you get pitures of serious custodians washing down chairs with clorox. One of the students in Queens was given a script for Tamiflu and she couldn’t get it filled.
There is something very incongruous here.
Maybe its a fluid and building situation but right now and for me its overblown hype.
Thanks for the interesting info. Why am I not surprised?
I believe people "know things", but they can't always rationalize how they "know". It's intuition. It's that feeling that something isn't right.
Most people are too busy to pay attention to these hunches and are easily deceived because of it. People "knew"Oboma was "creepy", but because they couldn't explain it, they brushed it off. It was their warning.
It's a known fact, psychologically, that when taking a test, trust your first instinct when answering a question, and you'll usually be right.
Could it be ..... that the swine flu crisis is manufactured so that the Tea Party movement won’t protest on July 4? If there’s a big contagious swine flu, we’ll think twice about hitting the streets, won’t we?
>>Finkelstein = me, governs. <<
I thought that poster was kidding!
I don’t get the idea of why people are falling to panic.
Don’t panic, prepare.
Take lots of Vitamin D and have enough food to last a week.
That’s the best we can do.
Oh and the normal, don’t drink from other’s cups, wash your hands, yada, yada.....
Thanks for your hard work, My FRiend!
As I intimated on another thread this morning, the Japanese news media here is beginning to more and more ponder out loud as to why President Obama will not order the US border closed with Mexico and stringent screening on people coming from there.
Not a time for panic but certainly a time for action.
Read between the lines, folks. CNN won't level with people and call a spade a spade. I have connected the dots I am sure many of you have, too.
If I were in one of the four US states bordering Mexico, I would put pressure on my state legislator or Governor like right now, to consider putting state troops on the border to prevent any illegal crossings and doing everything under Article 10 of the US Constitution to protect the citizens of that particular state, and would threaten them with removal from office if they fail to act in earnest and without further delay.
Many thanks, netmilsmom!
The problem with “closing the border” is it just stops the legitimate traffic from crossing (that could be screened). The real problem is the lack of border protection, namely a wall or fence.
Oboma needs sick people. Lots and lots of sick people. So many sick people, they'll be crying out for Health Care welfare. They'll be crying out for the savior to help them.
Gawd, the left wants that Health Care Welfare package so bad, they'll do anything to get it.
trust me, it is in the plan. I see the interstates shutting down if this continues. I am not sure of the timing, it depends on how quickly the CDC updates the counts. Every state in the nation has a ops plan on the shelf explaining how to handle a pandemic.
Missing vials of a potentially dangerous virus have prompted an Army investigation into the disappearance from a lab in Maryland. The vials contained samples of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis, a virus that sickens horses and can be spread to humans by mosquitoes. In 97 percent of cases, humans with the virus suffer flu-like symptoms, but it can be deadly in about 1 out of 100 cases, according to Caree Vander Linden, a spokeswoman for the Army's Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.
You say the virus started before that? Well, the truth is that the vials have been missing for about a year:
The inquiry begun in 2008 by the service's Criminal Investigation Command is "in the final stages of its mandatory review process before being closed," according to command spokesman Christopher Grey.Army Investigating Disappearance of Lethal Pathogen at Fort Detrick
More from that link:
The Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus is considered a possible tool of bioterrorism, but poses a significantly smaller threat than anthrax and other disease agents handled at the institute.
Also, if you will remember, the anthrax strain used in the 2001 attacks originated at the Army lab, and the prime suspect, Bruce E. Ivins committed suicide last year amid during the investigation.
Now on to the real clincher...did someone mention Venezuela? And Horses? Hmmmm....
Polo Horses Drop Dead In FloridaThere you go...a full blown conspiracy. The horses didn't die of a virus? Heck...wouldn't be the first time we were lied to.
For what possible purpose? The BO administration has been downplaying it. It's the WHO organization and the Mexican officials that keep pointing to the 6% mortality rate and screaming alarm.
They won't close the border, because it's not PC to discriminate against Mexicans, even flu infected ones. Doesn't matter if American's die as a result, just don't hurt any Mexican's feelings. And if they close the border for an illness, then they prove they could close the border against illegals.
So far just Mexicans are dying. Does the Mexican blood ( or Indian blood) lack something in their white blood cell make up?
“Every state in the nation has a ops plan on the shelf explaining how to handle a pandemic.”
And yet, the REAL question is how many actually have the stones to USE it??
As we saw with Katrina, even DISASTER PLANNING becomes politicized now. Think the Hurricane Pam excercise.
I think it’s because it’s technically a Mexican death. As such, he can’t milk it as a reason to turn it in to a crisis. “Never let a good crisis go to waste” — isn’t that what Emmanuel said?
The baby was Mexican and was in the United States for medical treatment.
But feel free to continue to panic...
You may be paranoid.:-)
Just curious - I haven’t been able to read all of the threads to see this discussed, but is it possible that the reason why the virus is more deadly in Mexico, is because of some genetic dispositions of the locals? The Mexicans that have died...do they have a lot of indian blood in them? When the Spaniards were exploring Latin America, whole native villages were wiped out by disease, while the Spaniards apparently survived their exposure to the diseases earlier in life. Interesting to see what happens over the next few days or weeks...
