Unfortunately, some are:

Egypt is considering slaughtering 400,000 pigs to stem panic.

(A) That won’t stem panic.

(B) This doesn’t have anything to do with pigs. It’s human-to-human contact, DUH - it ain’t pigs who have flown all around the world spreading this (idiots!).

Well here we go. 23 month old child dies from flu.

Comrade 0bama's Address to the Nation:

"Today we all mourn the needless death of an innocent child who succumbed to the H1N1 flu virus, however this should only serve as a reminder that our civil liberties, cherished as they are, should never trump the right to universal health care for all of our citizens, especially for the children. For that reason, I am declaring an unlimited state of national emergency, and among the measures authorized are temporary prohibitions on public gatherings of more than 10 people, with the exception of weddings, funerals, religious meetings, and school graduation ceremonies. This virus is spread person to person, and for that reason the numbers of people in one place must be capped for the present time.

The expanding nature of the H1N1 flu virus also means additional strain on America's health care infrastructure, which is why all private and public hospital facilities will be placed under federal control and supervision until the crisis is past. No individual needing medical attention will be turned away. If we, of the federal government can back the warranties of GM products, we can back the continued and improved health care for every man, woman and child in America. This is the only humane choice that can be made, especially as we face the challenges of this impending pandemic.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius will be providing details of the Federal Health Care Access Card which will be immediately phased into use effective May 1st. The FHCAC will become mandatory as of December 31st of this year, and we will finally put an end to the all-too-often disgraceful incidents in which our neighbors, family and friends are turned away for lack of ability to pay. In the richest Nation on Earth, that can no longer be permitted to happen, and that is why my Administration is taking these steps today.

Thank you, and Allah be praised, errr oops.

["WTF was that doing on the teleprompter, huh? Somebody trying to be funny? Someone looking for some jihad? Quit that laughing dammit! Ohhh it was -you- Rahm? Always the effin comedian, alright, that was pretty good, but I'll get you, just you watch and see, lol"]

“Around 36,000 Americans are killed a year by the various usual flu strains, IIRC.”

That’s also what I’ve read. Information was collected from 1990-1991 through 1998-1999 IIRC.

Many have died in Mexico according to Media reports, as well this latest report from Texas that could also yet be linked to a Mexican family, we don’t know. Regardless of whom, or where prayers for the family as well all the people of the World effected by this malady.

Some points that disturb me: It seems to me the Leftist Media is jumping with joy there is another catastrophe for them to roll up their sleeves and persue with creative camera angles as they do in the event of even the smallest of rainstorms in Southern California. It’s amazing how a camera can make flowing rainwater in a gutter appear at flood stage.

There seems a groundswell of jubilation by the Left at the potential of economic suffering by the Swine Industry, thus another potential economic setback for America. Another economic crisis if you will. The Left loves America to have economic (read Capitalistic) distress.

Here's some up-to-date data from the CDC:

2008-2009 Influenza Season Week 15 ending April 18, 2009 (All data are preliminary and may change as more reports are received.)

What bothers me is the world who supposedly hates us is going to depend on us to solve this.

As long as it’s not put up to the UN who would send the swine flu a strongly worded letter.

Agreed. Although, because they won’t shut down air travel with Mexico, I am very concerned. A unknowingly sick person gets on a commercial flight with 200 other people, going who knows where... the numbers seem staggering from just one contact.

Or the person who was but wasn’t confirmed at Disney Land.

Also from the above link, as pertains to the swine flu....

The viruses from all seven cases are closely related genetically and contain a unique combination of gene segments that have not been reported in the United States or elsewhere. Viruses from 6 cases are all resistant to amantadine and rimantidine and sensitive to zanamivir and oseltamivir, and sensitivity testing is underway for the remaining virus.

“Not unless the mortality rate get a heckuva lot higher.”

Please, everyone, understand this:

We don’t know the mortality rate of this flu yet. We haven’t had enough cases outside of Mexico yet.

I urge all due caution here. Not panic, but caution. Do not blow this off yet. You may live to regret it. Or not.

Maybe it will turn out to be a non-event. Or not. WE DON’T KNOW YET.

The media jumps up and down for joy because we turn in and watch their funny camera angles, and drive up their viewership numbers, as a result, they get more advertising dollars.

It is all a money making machine.

And, you know, most people in the media are there to report the “news.” Just like most people who work for the fire department are there to fight fires. No, we wish they never had to, but what fun is that.

FWIW, the anchorette on CNN bent over backwards not to ask the CDC guy they had on any questions about the toddler and/or her family. That kind of delicacy coming from the MSM automatically makes me suspicious.

Exactly...so why the hysteria?

UK:

Hundreds of Brits ‘will get swine flu in weeks’... and pandemic could strike 40% of us

By Daniel Martin
Last updated at 10:34 AM on 29th April 2009
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1174110/Hundreds-Brits-swine-flu-weeks—pandemic-strike-40-us.html?ITO=1490

- Two enter London hospital with ‘flu-like’ symptoms
- Health official says 40% of Britons could be infected
- Mexican death toll hits 159 with 2,500 more sick
- Second honeymoon couple quarantined in Scotland
- UK holiday firms cancel flights and repatriate tourists
- Brown insists Britain is well-placed to tackle outbreak

Hundreds of Britons can expect to be struck down with swine flu within weeks, a health expert has warned.

Professor Neil Ferguson, a member of the World Health Organisation’s taskforce tackling the outbreak, sounded his warning as global concern intensified.

In Britain, where there are two confirmed cases, dozens of people were being tested for the potentially fatal bug.

Professor Ferguson warned that up to 40 per cent of the British population, or 24 million people - could become ill if the outbreak dragged on until the winter and became a pandemic.
