"In any case, it hasn’t spread that much here, even in California where it was first found, and no American has died of it, for some reason."

But something like 7 Americans are currently in the hospital for it... out of the 64 confirmed cases... that's a hospitalization rate of about 11%. We haven't had a statistically significant number of cases yet to say that Americans are, or are not, dying at higher/lower rates than people in Mexico. Give it a couple more weeks to infect more people here, and we'll start to get a grasp on that.

Hopefully, by being proactive and hospitalizing people, we may be able to prevent some deaths that might have otherwise happened if we weren't on alert for this particular flu. Time will tell.

Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that although ordinary human flu accounts for 36,000 deaths every year, he was concerned by this strain.

That works out to about 100 deaths per DAY from the flu. There have been ZERO deaths in the US from this over the last 10 days, and only SEVEN confirmed deaths in Mexico from this. There appear to be other health problems connected with the other 150 deaths in Mexico.

This might turn out to be something bad, but most of this looks to be government/media-driven panic for their own reasons. Most of the the reported deaths in Mexico do not fit the "dead in a day" pattern of pandemic influenza.

Don't let anyone bull-rush you into fearful behavior.

No doubt there's an explanation, but several soundbytes last evening suggested this was a revision for ONE STATE in Mexico.

One thing WHO is looking for in this is a change in death rates, or infection rates in a given population.

There was a news brief last evening (very late) where they interviewed the father of a little boy who may have been the first patient ~ in the course of the interview it came out that EVERYBODY around there had had the flu and they were all over it.

At the same time the local organized labor guys and community leaders were concerned that the nearby industrial pig factories were unsanitary and stank.

Hard to tell who was telling the truth on that one. If true, and this was the first place with this flu, then it's mutated into a deadly version.

Only DNA tests can verify what's going on in Mexico.

One of my co-workers just came back from Cancun on Monday. Our boss told her to take the rest of the week off. She wasn't happy, but tough noogies.

Not only would she possibly expose the rest of us, but she would have exposed our patients as well. NOT good for business.

HIV isn't airborne.

*****************

Did I miss something?

carriers of HIV to wander around the country spreading the virus through unprotected sex.

He was answering the essential question of why it is a big deal (per se) to government types vs. the HIV. Airborne is much worse than sexual contact.

Yes, I get that the flu is easily contracted. However, the original post makes a good point:

Does anyone here find it odd that the Government will prevent an aircrafts passengers from disembarking the plane for a suspected case of Swine Flue?,while that same government will allow carriers of HIV to wander around the country spreading the virus through unprotected sex.Placing the health of populace in jeopardy

The govermnent is selective in its enforcement. Certain groups are protected from common sense measures that might prevent the spread of disease.

Oh, I agree there. Just stating that the response basically made sense.

My son has not specifically mentioned anything.
No precautions, nothing, but you know, the illegals and drug smugglers are a filthy lot anyway, and the BP inoculates for just about everything.

Appreciate the info, but illegals remain the number one public health hazard.

Came to work one morning and found bloody spit in my waste basket. . .cleaning lady turns out to be illegal and positive for TB.

That's good. Hairacanes are in the 'Lantic.

The "Oral Exercises" section cracks me up. It's hard!

Sounds like it's time to turn in your employer.

Regarding health, in general, and the current budding flu epidemice, there are, of course, a variety of issues ~ at the moment it's rich folks who are bringing in the flu from Acapulco.

Did I see a headline — turns out, this airplane wasn’t actually with flu symptoms, there were just some people who’d had too much to drink? Were they Marylanders? If so, I should have suggested it as a possibility yesterday.

It's a line from Airplane!

The actress who portrayed Mrs. Cleaver did a brief cameo in which she "translated" for a sick passenger.

She appears about 1 minute into this video:

Ol,

It’s a quote from the Zucker and Zucker film “Airplane” from the late 80’s.

The woman in the cut and on the bumpersticker was famous for a sitcom back in the 1950’s.
