Breaking now on FNC
We’ll have to wait for a socio-demographic statistical breakdown...
More like 5 miles.
The following was released by the CDC at 9PM EST tonight.
Interim Guidance to Assist Airline Flight Deck and Cabin Crew in Identifying Passengers Who May Have Swine Influenza at
http://cdc.gov/swineflu/aircrew.htm
It includes the following (note, news reports say the two sick guys on the plane had fever and nausea):
Interim Recommendations
During the swine influenza outbreak, extra vigilance is required to identify and report passengers with respiratory symptoms or fever. Any passenger who appears ill, or who reports not feeling well, should be observed or queried for the following signs or symptoms:
* Feeling feverish or temperature greater than 100°F (37.8°C) if measured. For children,feeling warm by parents report.
* Sore throat
* Cough
* Stuffy or runny nose
Any passengers observed to have or who report having two or more of these symptoms should be reported immediately to the CDC Quarantine Station of jurisdiction where the plane is expected to land.
Flight and cabin crew should follow airline guidelines for preventing spread of infection when interacting with these travelers.
“Where is BWI?”
Merlin, Hon!
Where is Merlin?
“why Americans are not dying from it, but Mexicans are.”
Because their society is filled with filth and crappy medical care.
Interesting. I didn't know that. It certainly points to any number of things like nutrition, climate, living conditions and medical care.
“I hope they were heading directly for a visit to the WH”
NO YOU DON’T. Then Obama will be martyred and sainted and hailed forever. I do not want the SOB dying by any reason.
I would suspect that most of them are not of primarily Indian descent, since most of the indigenous people or their very close descendants live in the more outlying areas and are not well off.
No, not really. The people who got the flu weren’t peasants, they weren’t old or ill, and they had good, prompt medical care. Apparently this strain reinfects people. I heard a report on a Spanish radio station (from Spain) of a journalist who had gotten it. He was hospitalized briefly, recovered, went home and was fine for a day or so. Then suddenly he got sick again, went back to the hospital, and was dead of uncontrollable pneumonia within hours.
The Mexican version seems to be much more virulent that what Americans have had; either that, or there is some other condition or even predisposition that makes Mexicans more severely affected by it.
It’s possible that it spread rapidly once it got to Mexico City because of population density. And it’s possible that it first spread in Southern Mexico because it had favorable conditions of some kind (climate?). I don’t know.
The two people who got it in the US were children, one boy and one girl, 9 and 10 years of age, IIRC, who lived in different counties near San Diego. One was a DOD dependent. I don’t know if they’d ever been to Mexico or had any contacts with it, but regardless, it doesn’t seem to have spread much beyond them.
“Because their society is filled with filth and crappy medical care.”
Not to mention living 25 million together in one of the most polluted cities on the planet.
That’s true, but in this case, I think it’s mostly people of European descent who are getting it - that is, if they’re middle class Mexicans, they probably have mostly European blood with only a slight amount of Indian ancestry. However, I don’t know the exact distribution so I’m just speculating. Maybe once there’s a better breakdown it will be clearer to us all.
Now that I understood, LOL.
There’s a bunch of wise guys on this thread!
Nausea is not consistent with any true “flu”.
OMG, Joe! Is that a real bumper sticker!?
“Jim never eats fish at home.”
MDers don’t use “youz/youse”. That’s a NY thing.
And “err” would better be written “air”, to be plain.
