Catholic Cardinal Meets With Obama: Says President Claims He's Not Pro-Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The president of the national conference of Catholic bishops recently elaborated further on the meeting he had in March with President Barack Obama. Cardinal George told a recent gathering of Catholic priests that Obama says he is not pro-abortion and will eventually work to reduce abortions.

For most pro-life advocates, Obama's extensive pro-abortion record of executive orders and key political appointments proves otherwise.

According to a Catholic News Service report, Cardinal Francis George discussed the conversation he had with Obama at a March 18 meeting at the White House.

"I think on the life issue he's on the wrong side of history," the cardinal said, but he added that Obama wants to make pro-life advocates appear as if he is on their side.

"It's hard to disagree with him because he'll always tell you he agrees with you," he said, according to CNS. "Maybe that's political. I think he sincerely wants to agree with you. You have to say, again and again, 'No, Mr. President, we don't agree (on abortion).'"

The Catholic News Service indicates Cardinal George said he told Obama he is concerned with the president's decision to overturn the Mexico City Policy and opening the door to funding groups that promote and perform abortions in other nations.

"He said we weren't exporting abortion," the cardinal recounted. "I said, 'Yes we are.' He would say, 'I know I have to do certain things here. ... But be patient and you'll see the pattern will change.' I said, 'Mr. President, you've given us nothing but the wrong signals on this issue.' So, we'll see, but I'm not as hopeful now as I was when he was first elected."

"I think he has his political debts to pay, and so he's paying them," Cardinal George said of the impression he was left with after the Obama meeting.

Ultimately, the Catholic pro-life leader cast a pessimistic view of the situation under Obama and the long-term outlook.

"I think we're up against something a little bit like slavery," he said, adding that Obama and abortion advocates are unwilling to change the law to protect human life before birth.

"It's a society-dividing issue, and on this issue, we're with Abraham Lincoln and he's with Stephen Douglas, and he doesn't like to hear that, but that's where he is," George said, according to CNS.

"For 80 years we were a slave republic, and it took a terrible war to end that. And now for 40 years we're in an abortion regime, and I'm not sure how that's going to end," he added.

“This guy has lost it.”

If by “it” you mean his soul, I fear you’re correct.

Sad no one has shown this Cardinal the truth regarding O bow ma’s (fourtimes) defense of murdering the just born alive in IL

This Cardinal is the Archbishop of Chicago. That is in IL. I am sure that the Cardinal is well aware of Obama's voting record in the IL state legislature.

Good for the Cardinal for drawing the slavery comparison, but I wonder what he was hopeful about when pres.O. was first elected. I wonder how he voted, but that’s pretty cynical of me I suppose.

Oh yes.

He is a champion for illegal immigration reform. He should be urging his flock to vote AGAINST the Democrats PROCHOICE platform. But nooooo. This hypocrite is leading his sheep straight to hell.

He'll answer to God.

Bishops canonically have no authority outside of their own diocese, and they're very conscious of that. So they're vastly reluctant to appear to be nosing into another bishop's mandate.

Indeed, many bishop practice "am I my brother's keeper?"

I wondered about that, too. Cdl George is good in some ways, but probably very much a Democrat and rather weak.

However, I will say this seems to have been a learning experience for him. Obama's technique of blandly agreeing with anybody on anything makes it very hard to deal with him, since you know he will say anything and do anything and that there is no getting a grip on him. Furthermore, the press always does their bit and will portray this as "Cdl George Agrees with Obama on Abortion."

But actually, all the Dems and the press do this. That's why the Pope was smart to keep Pelosi at arm's length. Cardinal George has just found out how foolish he was to get this close to The One.

Well, the now-52 Stop Obama at Notre Dame Good Guys are finally practicing “fraternal support” in the sense that they’re in solidarity with their brother Bishop John D’Arcy.

The main episcopal sin of the last 40 years, it seems to me, is the sin of laxity, of failure-to-discipline: sins of omission. I am not sure what form the “fraternal correction” of a lax bishop would take. I presume a good strong bishop should criticize a scandalously lax bishop face-to-face, i.e., not via press release. Matt 18:15

Few on the Left have as hard core pro-abortion legislative records as Obama.

They will all tell you they are not pro-Abortion, and oh, how they wish abortions weren’t necessary.

They say they are not pro-abortion, but their voting records and actions, and their support from radical pro-abortion groups like NARAL, Emily’s List, and Planned Parenthood disprove this.

They say they are not pro-abortion, but they are for for that ridiculous euphemism “a woman’s right to choose” Unspokenm subtext is, free to choose abortion.

If the US didn’t have such abortion extremists like Obama, and had a law , as they do in France, and most other countries, prohibiting abortions after the first trimester, this would no longer be a political football.

Pro-abortion all the time, for everyone, with no limits and no restrictions is a very American Leftist phenomenon.

Abortion in America is big business, and Leftists like Obama and Co cannot get elected without their contributions.
