WASHINGTON U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), issued the following statement today regarding U.S. Senator Arlen Specters (R-PA) decision to switch political parties in the face of a seemingly insurmountable bid for re-election next year:
Senator Specters decision today represents the height of political self-preservation. While this presents a short-term disappointment, voters next year will have a clear choice to cast their ballots for a potentially unbridled Democrat super-majority versus the system of checks-and-balances that Americans deserve.
April 14, 2009
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn released a letter today offering a full-throated endorsement of Sen. Arlen Specter in his coming primary against former congressman Pat Toomey,
Cornyn’s trying to cover his rear end, nothing more....
Clueless Cornyn.
Specter=just another Republican traitor. It’s time to file a lawsuit against the GOP and bury it!
I don’t know - Arlen may very well have totally surprised him.
It is a political trechery, and one that diminishes the potential political power of Cornyn himself, - and that right after Cornyn backed Arlen
So let me understand. Cornyn should have been doing everything possible to kick Specter out asap and give the Dems a supermajority even faster, rather than try to keep him around as a minimal line against card check etc?
Honestly, I’m happy right now. I feel liberated, because now I can freely say what I’ve thought about this bottom-feeder all along without any reservation.
Does this mean Cornyn and the NRSC won’t be supporting Specter like they were yesterday?
Why do you critize Cornyn in this? Spector is the slime ball.
GOOD question.... I’m waiting for the code pink crowd to protest Specter and run a RAT against him because of what he did to Anita Hill....
LESSON FOR MR. CORNYN
Parties should not interfere with, try to influence, or manipulate their primary battles by trying to prop up embattled incumbents. Parties are supposed to be neutral in the primary battle. They are supposed to have the VOTERS endorse the candidate before they come bulling in.
Because they violated this principle....they have it ON RECORD that they support the Democrat over THEIR OWN candidate. Wow. Maroons.
Thanks for posting that. I was looking in my inbox, thinking I’d received something awhile back from Cornyn endorsing Specter, but had already deleted it.
Many of us are assuming Specter won’t be the only one to go. Look for Snowe, Collins, McCain to bail. Much of the caterwauling of the McCain daughter seems to be prologue to the old man reaching the same conclusion as Specter.
Specter, so I have read, began as a democrat, changed parties to enhance his election prospects, but never really left the democrat party. Let’s not forget that he was the original attorney for the Earth Day murderer Ira Einhorn, and abandoned him - much as he now abandons the Republican party - to help his political goals.
This is probably good, in that the democrats in the Republican Party seem to be engaged in a self-purging of the party, claiming that the “party left them.” So be it. What will be left after they all slither away may be a better party than it is now. Maybe it will even find the courage to expel the pretenders.
i think cornyn’s statement could have been a little stronger against the switcher, something like, “we will defeat you.”
We don’t care. The wimp is gone.
IOW...he should have never backed Arlen. Period.
But here's the rub for me.....The big dogs in the GOP...don't have a clue how to fight the Dims, let alone understand what the American people want.
They are more concerned in keeping their jobs....by playing rope a dope with the American Sheeple.
