WASHINGTON (AP) - Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter disclosed plans Tuesday to switch parties, a move intended to boost his chances of winning re-election next year that will also push Democrats closer to a 60-vote filibuster-resistant majority.

"I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans," Specter said in a statement posted on a Web site devoted to Pennsylvania politics and confirmed by his office. Several Senate officials said a formal announcement could come later in the day or Wednesday.

I think that my congressman, Mark Kirk (R-IL), should switch parties. He’s pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay marriage, pro-spending increases, pro-illegal alien, and anti-Iraq surge. I emailed him, four times, and I asked why he’s a Republican. He didn’t answer me, so I emailed four of his aides and asked them why he’s a Republican. None of them responded.

He’s not switching - he’s reverting. Unless I’m mistaken, Specter (author of the Magic Lugie - er Bullet theory) was a Democrat District Attorney in Philly early on. And switched parties back then - not for idealogical reasons, but again, because it enhanced his chanches for the next election.

Arlen Specter, the lawyer for a real piece of filth who killed a girl, stuffed her in a closet, then fled to France to avoid jsil. Finally in a place where he belongs for the rest of his life: Graterford Prison.

The question now becomes does Specter retain his seniority? If so, he would be in a position to kick some Democratic committe chairman out of their post? Who does Reid piss off? Specter can’t beat out Inouye or Byrd on Appropriations, but I think he’s senior to Leahy in Judiciary or Boxer on Environment or Akaka on Veterans Affairs. This could scramble more than that since now the Democrats are over-represented on the committees. Someone’s going to have to be dumped.
