Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning.
Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next Senator from Minnesota. (Former Sen. Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

I sure hope so. As it stands now, 1/2 of our country has no representation at all.
Curb your enthusiasm. A filibuster-proof Senate working with Obama will be able to do a great deal of damage to the Republic before the new Congress is seated in 2011. It is waaay too early to celebrate. Specter has always been a worm, and the biggest mistake Bush made was making sure he got re-elected the last time. This sucks for several different reasons.
At least he made it official ... we all knew long time ago.
The vast bulk of the Senate has been sold down the treasonous river for decades.
SpectRE was a place holder on the pretend opposition side.
Will Republicans remove Specter from his committee assignments? Do Democrats have enough slots to keep Specter on the committees he's currently on now?

What took you so long, Judas?
Great news! Remove the cancer grow the party...
Describes Specter to a T.
More than anything, I think this represents the notion that he probably was going to lose in the GOP primaries.
He knows Toomey will kick his ass.
No such thing as DIMRAT “progressives.”
I refuse to use the word—to let them steal another word . . . like “choice” or happy (i.e. “gay”) . . .
They are REGRESSIVES having regressed all the way back to 2 years old and Sodom and Gomorrah.
Here comes “card-check.”
I’ll be that John Cornyn and the NRSC will continue to support and fund him in the next election! God forbid that Toomey should get it will still predictably be their position.
Thanks, Karl Rove. And, by the way, great job you did cutting the legs out from under Bill Simon and then backing Arnold.
No core moral principles to be guided by, just rank self preservation.
The MSM will fawn over his “courage” and “conviction” whereas Lieberman will always be mentioned in hushed tones as a traitor (and warmonger).
Specter’s always been a....well....lady of easy virtue (don’t wanna get banned for using more direct terms). As of today he’s officially “out of the closet”.Ira Einhorn’s best buddy on earth is an excellent fit for today’s RAT Party.
I wish all the big RINOs would do the same. It would get rid of the stupid rationalization of some that we have to support the republican no matter how liberal they are.
>liberal extremists like Arlen Specter will get voted out of congress<
But not before nationalized health care is put into place, before November of 2010. Once that behemoth is set loose, it will be virtually impossible to stop.
Senator Webb told a group of insurance people in Virginia that it “was a done deal”.
Given the situation with this flu outbreak, nationalized health care could be even more of a nightmare than we expected it to be.
I’m increasingly convinced that the powers that be will have martial law in place before that election—and possibly WWIII. Will be interesting to see if they allow it, or not.
