Fla. House approves offshore drilling Last Edited: Monday, 27 Apr 2009, 9:14 PM EDT Created On: Monday, 27 Apr 2009, 9:14 PM EDT

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Bill passed to allow offshore drilling by Florida's coast. The House approved a bill on Monday that could allow offshore oil drilling just three miles from the coast of the Sunshine State.

There were arguments that drilling could damage the environment and tourism, but the money, jobs, and reduction of dependency on foreign oil led the House to its decision.

Gov. Charlie Crist and a three-member Cabinet are the ones who can approve drilling leases in state waters between three and 10.5 miles from the coast.

Last week Crist said he would keep an open mind about the bill, but that he was concerned about how close it would be to the coast.

Great news if he will sign it.
Increased tax revenue, more jobs, better fishing.

That is the first call I am making tomorrow morning. I am also going to ping my 912 group about it. Smart move, the legislatures in FL are listening to the constituents for a change. It is a huge YES from 8 out of 10 people in this state. We need jobs, we need revenue, and we need great fishing that the rigs provide, and we need them NOW. If FL can pull this off, it would likely result in other states doing it as well.

Calls have to be made!

FYI - the fishing of the east coast is not that great because there are not that many fish anymore.

Offshore rigs would bring billions in oil revenue, lower gas prices or at least reduce chnace of $4 and $5 spikes plus the rigs attract lots of fish and marine wildlife.

It is shame this did not happen 5 years ago because it could have possibly saved GM and Chrysler.

About time FL gets off its lazy arse and starts pumping for America. TX, LA, and AK are carrying the load for the rest of the nation.

“Now it’s up to Crist”

He’s a “Bloomberg” Republican, not even worthy of the title RINO.

Don’t count on him!!!!!!! Unless Floridans themselves get out and pressure him.

How about tour boats out to the rig? I might go on one if down Florida way.

I don’t know, I read the story at the link and it didn’t say. I am just going to call his office and let him know that I support drilling offshore because it will produce much needed revenue, jobs, and excellent fishing offshore for our folks, that China is already planning to do so in an agreement with Cuba and I am sure they will not be following the EPA recommendations as our men and women will, and seeing as more oil bubbles up from fissures in the ocean floor than has been spilled by a rig, even through some of the most violent hurricanes in history, that enviromental issues should be minimal for the benefit gained.

Since the ocean floor has been producing oil in vast quantities and our sealife has been unaffected for all time with this natural occurence, it would be a bit arrogant to assume that us doing in the sea what is done naturally anyway would risk more than us not doing it, especially with the stringent requirements of the EPA on us, and not on the fissures in the ocean floor, or China and Cuba.

The more we can point out that we are educated on the facts, and the potential upside to this matter with the limited downside, the more likely it is to pass his desk with a yes. Crist is going to go the way the public goes on this issue, especially if he is eyeing a senate seat knowing he supported Obama and the stimulus package. The last poll I saw on this issue in the Orlando Sentinel had us at 80% in favor last time I checked it. Hope this helps.

And it will also make owning Gulf front property a possibility as most folks won’t want to look out at the sunset and view oil rigs 3 miles off shore. BTW fishing is fine, its just that the laws aren’t slanted towards the sport fishing groups. What is needed is more reefs in the 35’ water area.

Only 3 miles is idiotic.

Fish tend to cluster around offshore oil platforms it seems...

I guess they just don't know it is "Bad For Them" (just like the caribou who snuggle up to the hot oil flowing in the Alaskan pipeline during the winter!)
