New Ground Zero Memorial: 'Made in China'

It used to be called the "Freedom Tower," built by Americans in memory of 9/11, but the building planned to be constructed at Ground Zero has had its name changed to One World Trade Center, and according to a Pennsylvania newspaper's editorial, should now be stamped "Made in China."

The editorial board at Harrisburg's Patriot-News made the charge after learning that the tower's first 20 stories, designed to be clad in blast-resistant glass in case of future terrorist ambitions, will now be shielded by glass manufactured … in Beijing.

"Despite the fact that three American glass manufacturers, including Pittsburgh-headquartered PPG Industries, spent months working with the tower architects to plan and develop a new kind of glass for floors one through 20, none of these American companies was awarded the contract to make the glass," writes the Patriot-News. "That 'honor' is going to Chinese workers, mainly because they get paid so little."

Pull back the curtain on the rough-and-tumble environment in which so many of our consumer products are being manufactured with "Poorly Made in China: An Insider's Account of the Tactics Behind China's Production Game"

US Glass Magazine reported the contract for the safety-critical glass was awarded to the lowest bidder, a U.S. firm, DCM Solera, which subcontracted procurement of the glass from a Chinese manufacturer.

WABC-TV in New York City reports that PPG Industries actually developed the blast-resistant technology in the glass and had been considered the front-runner to fulfill the $82 million contract.

Vicky Holt, senior vice president of PPG, told the station, "It is absolutely astounding to us that they would take a project with this level of development work that we all invested in prior to it's completion, and one with this level of visibility, and bid it offshore."

You left out one important part of the story....

The Sentinel of Cumberland County, Pa., reports that the Chinese firm can only produce the glass because it holds a license from PPG to use the technology.

Sounds like PPG caused their own problem. China paid for license and greedy PPG took the money. Case closed.

How about just building another office building and be done with it?

The safety argument failed to convince Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who is calling on the Port Authority to rescind the glass contract.

"I think that we have seen product after product from China be unreliable," Schumer told WABC-TV, "and in this instance, we need the most reliable."

Fire safety expert Glenn Corbett told the station, "This building has to not only meet but exceed every possible safety and security standard out there."

If that is going to be a serious issue they had better look at the structural steel going in to this building. I am willing to bet that it is coming from China.

Just as important (maybe more important) is the fasteners (rivets) holding the structure together. These too are likely coming from China.

I am a buy American guy but more and more a lot of things are not even available made in America.

Suggest you look a little more closely at how the Chinese force foreign companies to license technology to local Chinese companies if they are to even be allowed to do any business in China, before you make that charge.

It this a case of China having bought the license, or a case of where China previously demanded rights to all PPG’s technologies in exchange for letting PPG make its own products in China? Meaning they got to undercut PPG here. A deal with a Chinese devil.

New Ground Zero Memorial: 'Made in China'

They and/or the Russians may very well have played a role in the 911 attacks.

From the Sino-Russian Joint Statement of April 23, 1997:
"The two sides [China and Russia] shall, in the spirit of partnership, strive to promote the multipolarization of the world and the establishment of a new international order."

[2009] Russia, China plan new joint military exercises

By MARTIN SIEFF, UPI Senior News Analyst
Published: March 26, 2009

WASHINGTON, March 26 (UPI) -- The continuing tensions over Russia's refusal to sell its state-of-the-art land warfare advanced weapons systems to China hasn't interrupted the rhythm of major joint military exercises between the two major land powers on the Eurasian landmass. The latest in the regular, biennial series of exercises between the two nations has been confirmed for this summer.

The next in the now well-established series of exercises called Peace Mission 2009 will be carried out in northeastern China, the Russian Defense Ministry announced March 18, according to a report carried by the RIA Novosti news agency.

The first bilateral Peace Mission maneuvers -- described at the time as counter-terrorism exercises -- were held in Russia and the eastern Chinese province of Shandong in August 2005. As we reported at that time, they were a lot bigger than mere counter-terrorism exercises. Warships, squadrons of combat aircraft and more than 10,000 troops were involved carrying out landings against hypothetically hostile shores. The maneuvers also involved large-scale paratroops drops. The scale and nature of those exercises suggested a trial run for a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan with Russian support. ..."

Not impossible — but I have no trouble believing that the likes of Taliban and al-Qaeda have quite enough hatred of their own to be solely responsible for such an atrocity.

So when did China have the power to “Force” American Companies for business. Does Communism have that much power over America.

Huh?? My comment had nothing to do with whose fault. China legally gained the rights to the technology from PPG and you want to blame China. PPG was out smarted, plain and simple. Maybe you should start looking at management of PPG.

Either they license the technology or it gets stolen and they get paid nothing. How’s that for a deal?

That power comes from Free Trade. All these Free Trade deals have codicils and covenants that restrict what the US can do....but not its Free Trade partner

As some here have mentioned Free Traders as “Free Traitors”....they could not have been more right.

If you support Free Trade with Communist China....you are a Communist

many of these clowns ‘round here aren't “ashamed”...

hell, they don't give a damn about America or Americans!

All they care about is “me, myself & I” and getting the cheapest price for whatever they need... and to hell with everyone else...and that is the reason that we have LOST the mfg. base in this country to a bunch of Chicoms and now we have to BORROW from those same Chicoms to stay afloat! DUH...

I sure in the heck don’t support it. But if American companies want to play China game they can’t have it both ways.
